Comcast Launches Launches High-Speed 2go, 4G Generation High-Speed Wireless Data Service in the Boston

Comcast Launches 4G Version of High-Speed 2go Wireless Data Service in Boston Area

High-Speed 2go Now Provides Consumers With 4G or 3G Access to the Internet

Comcast, one of the nation’s leading providers of entertainment, information and communications products and services, today launched its 4G or fourth generation high-speed wireless data service in the Boston area as the company continues its nationwide rollout of High-Speed 2go™. Today’s launch builds upon the success of Comcast’s High-Speed 2go 3G offering, which was introduced in May 2010.

Comcast’s High-Speed 2go is a mobile Internet solution that provides the fastest available wireless Internet speeds in the nation via wireless data cards. Comcast now offers a fourth-generation or 4G wireless service in addition to a nationwide 3G wireless service. Comcast is selling this wireless service bundled with one or more of its popular Internet, phone and television products, providing mobile broadband wherever and whenever customers need to be connected.

“We know that consumers in the Boston area embrace technology and Comcast is proud to bring them 4G service bundled with blazing fast Internet speeds up to 50 Mbps and beyond at home or on the go,” said Steve Hackley, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Greater Boston Region. “Comcast continues to offer the most innovative products and services in the market whether it’s with XFINITY TV, Voice, Internet or now wireless – all for the ultimate benefit of customers in the region.”

Comcast is now selling three different data cards and service plans:

  • High-Speed 2go Metro (4G) service uses a 4G-only data card giving customers the fastest wireless service within the 4G metro coverage area. The 4G device operates only in a 4G network footprint.
  • High-Speed 2go Nationwide (3G) service uses a 3G-only data card giving customers nationwide wireless service. The 3G-only device operates on Sprint’s national 3G network.
  • High-Speed 2go Nationwide Preferred (4G/3G) service delivers the fastest metro 4G service plus coast-to-coast access on Sprint’s national 3G network. The 4G/3G device operates by switching between available 4G and 3G networks.

The world-class services Comcast is known for in the home are beginning to be extended to where consumers work, live and play. High-speed mobile Internet is one of the first products consumers want as a natural extension of Comcast’s super fast wired high-speed Internet.

Bundled Pricing

For the first time, consumers will have access to blazing fast wired and wireless Internet – sold together at launch as a “Fast Pack” for as low as $54.99 per month for one year. Both new and existing Comcast customers will be eligible for special bundled pricing, with existing Comcast High-Speed Internet customers receiving 4G wireless or 3G wireless as an add-on for as low as $40 per month. Visit www.comcast.com/highspeed2go for additional pricing plans and service packages.

The $54.99 per month Fast Pack Metro (4G) service includes Comcast’s home Internet service with speeds up to 12 Mbps, a free WiFi router for mobility and extended coverage in the home, and 4G service that will provide 3 to 6 Mbps average download speeds when customers are on the go. The Fast Pack Nationwide (3G) service, for as low as $54.99 per month, includes Comcast’s 12 Mbps home Internet service, a free WiFi router for mobility and extended coverage in the home, and nationwide 3G mobile network access. For an additional $15 per month, consumers can upgrade to the Fast Pack Nationwide Preferred (4G/3G) service that includes the Fast Pack Metro 4G service plus nationwide 3G mobile Internet access. All prices are in effect for the first 12 months.

Comcast is selling wireless data services following its investment in Clearwire in November 2008. Comcast’s 4G service is being provided via the Clearwire network, and its 3G service is being provided by Sprint’s nationwide 3G network. Comcast is one of the first investors in Clearwire to bring a service to market and expects that it will continue to add value to existing bundled products.

New Globalstar Satellites Ready to Ship to Launch Site

Globalstar, Inc. (Nasdaq:GSAT – News), a leading provider of mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses, government, and consumers, today announced it has taken delivery of three additional second-generation satellites from manufacturer Thales Alenia Space. The three new satellites are being shipped to the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan where they will join the three new satellites that were delivered in early August. All six new second-generation satellites will undergo preparations and testing for an October launch using the highly reliable Soyuz launch vehicle.

“Taking delivery of these three new satellites completes a milestone achievement for Globalstar as we can now proceed, on schedule, with preparations for next month’s inaugural second-generation satellite launch,” said Tony Navarra, President, Global Operations for Globalstar, Inc. “When our new constellation is fully deployed we will once again reliably provide the world’s finest quality mobile satellite voice and fastest mobile satellite handset data services to commercial and government customers in more than 120 countries. Combined with our affordable and award-winning suite of consumer retail SPOT products we will be uniquely positioned to offer the world’s most extensive lineup of high quality mobile satellite services to the broadest range of customers around the globe.”

A total of four launches carrying six satellites each will be conducted by launch services provider Arianespace using the Soyuz launch vehicle which has been used to successfully launch Globalstar satellites on eight previous occasions. The Company plans to integrate the 24 new second-generation satellites with the eight first-generation satellites that were launched in 2007, to form a 32 satellite constellation. The new constellation is expected to secure Globalstar’s space segment beyond 2025.

Once the six new Globalstar satellites are in operational orbit, the most immediate service improvement will benefit those customers who use the Company’s voice and Duplex data services. With each subsequent launch, these customers can expect a progressive return to the high reliability and service quality enjoyed before 2007.

Once fully deployed the advanced second-generation constellation and next-generation ground network are designed to provide Globalstar customers with enhanced services featuring increased data speeds of up to 256 kbps in a flexible Internet protocol multimedia subsystem (IMS) configuration. Products and services supported are expected to include: push-to-talk and multicasting, advanced messaging capabilities such as multimedia messaging or MMS, mobile video, geo-location services, multi-band and multi-mode handsets, and data devices with GPS integration. The second-generation satellites are also designed to support Globalstar’s current lineup of voice, Duplex and Simplex data products and services including the Company’s lineup of Spot retail consumer products.

ADTRAN Announces Managed Layer 3, 28-port Gigabit Ethernet Switches

ADTRAN Delivers Efficient, High-Density, Managed Layer 3 Switching Solutions in the Industry’s Smallest Form Factor

New Platforms Optimize Business Operations with Greater Bandwidth, Enhanced Multi-Service Features and Reduced Power Consumption

NetVanta-1534 Managed Layer 3 Switching

ADTRAN®, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN – News), a leading supplier of converged access and unified business solutions, today announced its second generation of high-density, managed Layer 3, 28-port Gigabit Ethernet switches. These platforms deliver greater bandwidth and feature enhancements that optimize business communications, mission-critical network availability and productivity, in addition to a wealth of new features and power conservation, all in the industry’s smallest form factor.

The NetVanta 1534 and NetVanta 1544 offer all of the functionality of first-generation models, in a half-rack form factor – the smallest in the industry. With the ability to place NetVanta units side by side, customers with limited rack space, such as those in hospitality or retail, can realize the network performance and features they need today, with room for future growth. These platforms offer an innovative design that not only enables a smaller form factor, but enables both noise reduction and energy savings with up to 70 percent savings in power consumption versus comparable models. The design also addresses the need for business continuity with redundant power support.

“ADTRAN is making high-performance switching even more affordable for the small and mid-size enterprise,” said Rob Arnold, senior analyst, Frost & Sullivan. “These NetVanta switch platforms add unique high-bandwidth capabilities, enhanced performance and new features, all while enabling the customer to conserve energy and rack space.”

In addition to these innovations, ADTRAN’s NetVanta switch platforms offer valuable management tools designed to enhance security, network availability and simplify management. These include:

Desktop Security Auditing is a unique feature from ADTRAN that enables IT administrators to audit client PCs and ensure network security. Desktop Security Auditing uses the Microsoft® Network Access Protection (NAP) Protocol to monitor the health of client computers. This protocol ensures that Microsoft OS-based systems connected to the network are using appropriate corporate policies, such as firewall or antivirus settings. This allows network administrators to quickly identify devices on the network that do not meet corporate IT security policies.

Network Forensics provides a unique method of simplifying network administration. Using this feature, system administrators can readily review collected information about any device on the network. This tool maps a device’s IP or MAC address to the corresponding switch port location.

Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) Diagnostics provides a comprehensive means for network administrators to troubleshoot SFP and fiber connections by helping them identify problem areas such as bad fiber splices or mismatched SFP modules.

“With a unique space-saving form factor and standards-based Ethernet ports featuring two and one-half times the bandwidth found in competitive offerings, ADTRAN’s NetVanta Ethernet switches allow customers to conserve rack space while providing higher performance switching,” said Todd Lattanzi, senior product manager, ADTRAN Enterprise Networks Division. “Customers can both increase port density and bandwidth between switches as business applications drive new requirements, allowing for an innovative pay-as-you-grow approach.”

The NetVanta 1544 is a Layer 3 switch offering 24 fixed 10/100/1000Base-T ports plus four 2.5 Gbps SFP ports making it ideal for switch aggregation or Gigabit-to-the-desktop applications. This device is perfect for applications where there is a need to aggregate multiple access switches and provide inter-VLAN switching. The NetVanta 1534 offers 24 fixed 10/100/1000Base-T ports plus two 2.5 Gbps SFP ports and two 1 Gbps SFP ports. This managed, 28-port, Layer 3 lite, Gigabit Ethernet switch is designed for fast, secure, cost-effective LAN switching. It is perfect for higher-bandwidth applications, Gigabit-to-the-desktop deployments and network security.

ADTRAN’s innovative second generation products also bring cost savings for the customer. The NetVanta 1534 (2nd Generation) has a list price of $1,545, while the NetVanta 1544 (2nd Generation) offers a list price of $2,295. These products are currently shipping.
