RFMD Introduces RF5365 WiFi Front End Module

RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq:RFMD – News), a global leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance radio frequency components and compound semiconductor technologies, today announced availability of the RF5365 WiFi front end module (FEM). The highly integrated RF5365 FEM satisfies the need for aggressive size reductions for typical 802.11b/g front-end designs and greatly reduces the number of components outside the core chipset.

RFMD’s RF5365 FEM integrates a 802.11b/g power amplifier with a single pole three throw (SP3T) switch for 2.4 GHz to 2.5 Ghz ISM band applications. By integrating SP3T switch functionality, the RF5365 is able to route WLAN and Bluetooth(R) receive/transmit signals to two system-on-chip (SOC) transceivers, accommodating a common implementation in high-performance consumer electronics and handset/handheld WiFi applications. The SP3T switch can also act as a splitter to transmit or receive Bluetooth(R) and WLAN signals simultaneously.

The RF5365′s 802.11 b/g power amplifier delivers 18dBm of linear output power for higher efficiency and lower EVM for 11n applications. Additionally, integrated 2170MHz filtering and harmonic attenuation reduce the need for a high loss/attenuation filter at the FEM output, increasing output power at the antenna.

An integrated Rx balun eliminates requirements for tuning components between the FEM and the SoC, and a direct-to-battery connection eliminates the need for additional DC circuitry. Finally, an integrated power detector increases immunity to power supply, temperature and VSWR fluctuations and improves the accuracy of the part’s closed loop power control. The RF5365 is fully tested and packaged in a small 2.5 mm x 2.5 mm QFN package.

Wavion Introduces a New Best-of-Breed Combo 5.X GHz Base Station for High-Interference Environments

Wavion™, a technology leader in Metro and Rural Wi-Fi with a new generation of Wi-Fi Base Stations, today announced the release of a new Base Station for the 5.X GHz band, specially designed to cope effectively with high-interference environments.

As a companion to its market leading WBS-2400 and WBS-5800 Base Stations, operating in the 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands, respectively, Wavion introduces the Combo WBS-5000 Sector Base Station for operating in the entire 4.9-5.9 GHz band. This new base station has been specially designed to cope effectively with high-interference environments. Based on Wavion’s spatially adaptive beamforming technology, and leveraging three radios and three 120 degrees sectorial antennas, it provides enhanced interference immunity, extended range, superior non-line-of-sight coverage, high throughput and robust connectivity to any off-the-shelf standard 802.11a based CPEs. Its superior interference resilience stems from its narrow spatial directivity, provided by the sector antennas and the beamforming, in conjunction with its unique interference handling capabilities. The new base station also enables 10 MHz channel bandwidth, in addition to the customary 20 MHz bandwidth, thus further enhancing its noise-coping capabilities.

Wavion’s Carrier-Grade WBS-5000 can be deployed either as stand-alone, in cases that the coverage requirements are limited to a 120 degrees sector, or as part of a multiple-sector deployment, with up to three co-located sectors, in cases where higher capacity is required per given area. Unlike more conventional equipment, it does not require costly high towers and can be easily installed on poles and yet provide high quality and homogeneous coverage. Moreover, the flexible open architecture and ruggedized and weather-proof enclosure add significantly to the unique value offering for Telecom Operators.

“Our powerful interference-resilience capabilities provide operators with the best radio performance and coverage, enabling them to provide high quality service even in most challenging environments,” said Dr. Mati Wax, Wavion’s Founder and CTO. “The addition of this new base station to our portfolio greatly enlarges our addressable market and provides our customers the flexibility to address their various internet connectivity, video surveillance and backhauling needs.”

About Wavion

Wavion is a technology leader in Metro and Rural Wi-Fi and Wireless broadband access, with deployments in more than 57 countries.

RFMD(R) Unveils Complete Front End Module for Handheld WiFi and Bluetooth(R) Systems

RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq:RFMD – News), a global leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance RF components and compound semiconductor technologies, today unveiled a highly integrated new front end module (FEM) that delivers a complete integrated solution for handset/handheld WiFi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth(R) systems.

RFMD’s RF5755 FEM integrates a 2.5GHz Power Amplifier (PA), multi-throw switch (SP3T), Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) and power detector coupler. The RF5755 also features integrated matching circuitry with output harmonic attenuation, reducing the bill of materials (BOM) and manufacturing costs. The RF5755 is packaged in a small 16-pin QFN package (3mm x 3mm x 0.5mm), minimizing layout area in customer applications.

The highly integrated RF5755 delivers many features and customer benefits: high linear output power (20dBm) allowing higher efficiency and lower EVM for 11n applications; the ability to switch between WiFi transmit, WiFi receive, or Bluetooth (transmit or receive); reduced need for a high loss/attenuation filter at the FEM output; high IIP3 and gain; simultaneous receive of WiFi and Bluetooth with positive gain in both paths (utilizing the SPST switch after the LNA); and a direct-to-battery connection eliminating the need for additional DC circuitry. Additionally, the integrated power detector coupler decreases sensitivity to voltage supply, temperature, and VSWR and improves the accuracy of the closed loop power control.

The RF5755 FEM is fully tested, including EVM and all DC parameters, providing a reduced size, single-placement solution that minimizes system footprint, reduces costs, and accelerates time-to-market for high linear output power applications.

D-Link Becomes Ekahau Infrastructure Partner to Offer Organizations Wi-Fi-Based Real-Time Location System

Based on a growing trend among organizations of all sizes to provide greater protection for people and property, D-Link today announced it is now offering its wireless customers the widely deployed Real Time Location System (RTLS) application suite from Ekahau, Inc., a leader in Wi-Fi-based RTLS.

Ekahau’s RTLS solution is comprised of location tracking software — that when combined with Wi-Fi tags or other Wi-Fi-enabled devices like phones and laptops — enables organizations to keep close track of employees, inventory and other assets on a real-time basis over existing Wi-Fi infrastructure. The tags and Wi-Fi-enabled devices send the information to the Ekahau RTLS server, which calculates tag locations, manages the tags and provides a business application layer for end-users and integration with other enterprise systems.

Ekahau RTLS applications include:

A health facility experiences significant budget savings through reduced equipment purchasing and leasing programs by tracking infusion pumps and ventilators in a 3 million square-foot facility.

People, parts and tools are tracked constantly at a U.S. nuclear and fossil fuel power company to reduce reactor down time, saving the company more than $1 million per day.

The Ekahau RTLS system works over any 802.11a/b/g/n wireless network. Before the system is deployed, a simple walk-through site survey is conducted to prepare the network for RTLS tracking, and to determine if the existing access point (AP) density is adequate to provide required coverage and accuracy.

Ekahau’s comprehensive site survey tool (ESS) is used for Wi-Fi network planning, optimization and RTLS deployments. Once the site survey is complete, the RF signal pattern of each AP is embedded into the software to ensure tag location accuracy. Tags are then provided to everyone who will be using the system or placed on all devices an organization wishes to track.

“D-Link is the ideal hardware vendor for the Ekahau RTLS solution because we can cater to large customers with campus-wide Wi-Fi networks, and to those with remote sites who need a simple method to keep track and report on physical assets and people within their facilities,” said Josh Chai, D-Link’s director of global alliances.

“Ekahau RTLS provides organizations of all types and sizes with solutions for improving efficiency, mitigating loss and enhancing safety that are easy to deploy and offer almost immediate return on investment,” said Tuomo Rutanen, senior vice president of marketing and business development at Ekahau.

Availability and Pricing

Ekahau RTLS and ESS site survey tools are now available to customers with the D-Link wireless solution through D-Link’s vast network of value-added resellers, solution providers and distributors.
