Socket Mobile Expands Barcode Scanner Compatibility With RIM BlackBerry Smartphones

BlackBerry Users Can Quickly and Easily Add High-Volume Barcode Scanning Capabilities to Their Smartphones

Socket Mobile, Inc. (NASDAQ:SCKT – News), an innovative provider of mobile productivity solutions, today announced expanded compatibility of the Socket Bluetooth® Cordless Hand Scanner™ (CHS) Series 7 with BlackBerry® smartphones including the Bold™, Curve™, Pearl™, Storm™ and Tour™.

The CHS Series 7 brings industrial-class barcode scanning into a lightweight, pocket-sized form factor and is available in 2D and 1D scanning options with either standard or antimicrobial casing, which protects the device against the multiplication and spread of harmful bacteria and microbes and is a popular choice in the healthcare and hospitality industries. Socket provides free SocketScan™ software, which enables the CHS to connect to any BlackBerry smartphone via Bluetooth, allowing easy integration by an IT team or individual users.

“One of the key areas where we’re seeing increased opportunities for barcode scanning applications on smartphones is in the healthcare industry. According to Manhattan Research, 64 percent of physicians use smartphones, and that number is expected to grow to 81 percent by 2012,” said Samantha Chu, data collection product manager at Socket Mobile. “Popular applications for barcode scanning to smartphones in healthcare include patient identification, medication administration, documentation and inventory and asset management.”

“Many healthcare clinicians experience mobile device overload, so enabling them to accomplish more tasks with one device helps them be more effective in patient care,” said Chu. “BlackBerry is currently the number one smartphone of choice for both physicians and home care providers, and with the CHS, healthcare workers can seamlessly and cost-effectively integrate valuable 2D and 1D barcode scanning functionality into a device they are already using on a day-to-day basis.”

RIM will be demonstrating the CHS and Blackberry live at the ESRI International User Conference in San Diego at the San Diego Convention Center in booth #1305, July 12-16, and at the Syclo Mobile Conference in downtown Chicago at the Swissôtel Chicago, July 14-16.

SocketScan for BlackBerry is available now for all 1D versions of the Socket Bluetooth CHS, and will be available for all 2D versions (7X, 7XRx) in Q4 2010. For a complete list of compatible BlackBerry smartphone models and to download SocketScan software for BlackBerry, please visit www.socketmobile.com/blackberry

View the demo video of the Socket CHS with the BlackBerry 9700 or visit the Socket CHS Web page to learn more about Socket barcode scanning solutions with smartphones.

PLEASANTON, CA–(Marketwire – 02/23/10) – Polycom, Inc. (NASDAQ:PLCM – News), the global leader in telepresence, video and voice communication solutions, today announced the Polycom Touch Control, an innovative interface device for Polycom room telepresence systems that allows users to control all aspects of their experience using a touch-screen that will be instantly familiar to millions of mobile phone and device users. By simplifying how users find colleagues, place calls, share content and access advanced features, the Polycom Touch Control shortens the learning curve for new users and facilitates broader adoption of visual communication which helps organizations drive faster return on investment and greater productivity.

“The Polycom Touch Control addresses a long-standing issue within the conferencing industry — the inadequacy of the handheld remote control,” said Ira Weinstein, analyst and partner at Wainhouse Research. “For many casual users, video conferencing remotes have too many buttons and offer too many functions. On the other hand, for many super-users and administrators, the remotes are missing key features and capabilities. By leveraging the power of a leading mobile platform and user interface design techniques from the mobile phone industry, Polycom was able to create a flexible, configurable remote suitable for users of every level.”

Dramatically Simpler User Experience — For Casual and Power Users
Providing a user experience similar to industry-leading mobile devices (like smart phones, mp3 players, etc.), the Polycom Touch Control’s seven-inch color screen allows casual and power users to easily navigate key functions from basic dialing and content sharing, to advanced features using finger gestures to touch and slide universally recognizable icons and navigate intuitive arrows and tabs. The graphical interface makes it easy for users to locate contacts and dial video calls using a corporate directory, local address book, or presence-enabled contact list. The Polycom Touch Control also makes it easy for anyone (even visitors without network access) to share content during a video call or to present content using the room’s audio/visual systems during a non-video meeting. Multiple content sharing methods are available with Touch Control to allow users to quickly and easily share content using the integrated USB ports.

Powerful Unified Communications Integration
The flexible Polycom Touch Control will also help accelerate adoption of video-enabled unified communications by making it easy and seamless for users to launch video calls within the leading unified communications applications of Polycom Open Collaboration Network? partners. For example, leveraging the Polycom Conference for Outlook integration, the Polycom Touch Control can display the Microsoft Outlook meeting calendar for a room or user and allow participants to join a meeting using telepresence by simply tapping the “join now” button on the screen.

“Simplifying the user experience is a key differentiator for Polycom and one that we are leading in a number of ways, from video-enabling applications people use every day like Microsoft Outlook, to delivering a more intuitive interface like the Polycom Touch Control,” said Joe Sigrist, senior vice president and general manager of visual communications at Polycom. “Historically, the remote control was the front line for the user experience. The Polycom Touch Control is a revolutionary interface for telepresence and video conferencing that our beta testers quickly embraced and unanimously love.”

Easy System and Component Management — In addition to simplifying the experience for users, the Polycom Touch Control is an intuitive interface for IT administrators, who can easily access system settings and in future software releases access other Polycom solutions such as the RSS 2000 and 4000 servers and Polycom SoundStructure installed-room audio systems. The Polycom Touch Control devices can also be centrally managed using the Polycom Converged Management Application (CMA).

Additional information is available at www.polycom.com/touchcontrol.

Availability:
The Polycom Touch Control is planned for availability in Q4 2010. Polycom solutions are available through certified Polycom reseller partners.

Megaproject in City Center Rosario, Argentina to showcase 3Com’s full breadth of solutions, unparalleled performance and TCO benefits

ROSARIO, Argentina–(BUSINESS WIRE)–3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS – News) today announced that Casino Club of Argentina has awarded the company a significant contract to deploy its H3C® enterprise networking and TippingPoint® security solutions at City Center Rosario, Latin America’s largest entertainment complex. The megaproject opened in Rosario, Argentina in October 2009.

The largest of its kind in Latin America, this City Center will boast a casino with high-stakes games, a five-star hotel, and a convention center with capacity for 2,000 persons. In addition, the complex will provide tourism, culture, and arts offers in the Rosario area, making it a significant economic development opportunity for the city.

“After a competitive bidding process, we unanimously selected 3Com’s H3C enterprise networking and TippingPoint security solutions because of our high satisfaction with the H3C portfolio at business operations in the complex, such as the Palermo Race Track Casino (Casino del Hipódromo de Palermo) and the Puerto Madero Casino,” said Emmanuel Bonaroti, manager, Organization and Systems, City Center Rosario. “3Com understands our business – the company’s executives and engineering teams understand how we operate as a company and as a group. Furthermore, 3Com knows what our needs are and they know how to meet those needs. They guarantee our continuous operation with their high performance, high value solutions, which is critical to us.”

City Center Rosario required a high-value secure networking solution for the Casino that lowered its total cost of ownership without sacrificing performance, scalability and reliability. By leveraging 3Com’s H3C enterprise networking switches, Casino Club of Argentina will be able to help ensure 24×7 operational continuity for its high-stakes games, guaranteeing optimum ROI. In addition, this huge facility required implementing the best security solutions to safeguard information, as well as state-of-the-art connectivity for its closed-circuit surveillance system, and for guest services at both the hotel and convention center.

To ensure uninterrupted, secure operation and 24×7 reliability, City Center Rosario includes the following 3Com solution elements:

*H3C S9500 10-Gigabit Ethernet core switches to drive high availability in the network core

**H3C S7500E series next-generation high-end multi-service routing switches in the distribution layer

***H3C S5600 Gigabit stackable switches at the edge to provide connectivity for the casino’s closed-circuit surveillance system

A TippingPoint 1200E IPS to safeguard information

3Com’s wireless controllers and access points will also be deployed for Wi-Fi connectivity

“Our company is very proud to collaborate on this project,” said Wilson Barón, director, southern region, 3Com Latin America. “We know that network quality is critical for a business like casino, and we are fully confident this network solution will meet their expectations.”

“One of the greatest challenges was achieving the integration of different services throughout the complex, using various 3Com solutions—not just at the casino, but also at the hotel, food and beverage areas, and security. 3Com has been able to seamlessly and effectively integrate the various complex solutions into one cohesive network, meeting all security requirements with enough flexibility to operate with great efficiency,” added Bonaroti.

About 3Com

Panduit Physical Infrastructure Manager Software Platform v3.0 for Smart Data Centers and Connected Buildings Helps to Lower Infrastructure Risks and Costs

Panduit announces the launch of its Physical Infrastructure Manager™ (PIM™) Software Platform Version 3.0, which will help customers reduce infrastructure risks and costs. Through intelligent, real-time management of the physical infrastructure, the PIM™ Software Platform, designed and developed by Panduit Corp. in the United States, increases the reliability and efficiency of enterprise networks and network operations in smart data centers and connected buildings.

Panduit’s Unified Physical InfrastructureSM (UPI) based solutions leverage an intelligent physical infrastructure as the foundation for enabling convergence across communication, computing, control, power, and security systems. These end-to-end solutions drive operational and financial advantages across the enterprise, allowing businesses to improve reliability, reduce costs, heighten agility, and support sustainability initiatives.

Enabling Panduit’s UPI approach, the PIM™ Software Platform helps to manage the integration of key infrastructure elements by providing the ability to view both the physical and logical topology of an infrastructure and extend real-time intelligence through both layers. This “end-to-end visibility” enables systems consolidation and network convergence, thereby improving availability, interoperability, and security while reducing operating costs.

“Our UPI approach is about aligning the physical infrastructure to the logical layers of the network. This is how customers will truly be able to deploy a smarter, unified business foundation,” said Vineeth Ram, VP Global Strategic Marketing, Panduit. “Our software strategy is critical to this approach. Our product portfolio offers solutions necessary to connect and manage the physical components for a reliable infrastructure. However, we specifically designed the PIM™ Software Platform as the intelligence that automates the physical infrastructure elements to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of network and systems infrastructure operations.”

“This new PIM™ Software Platform release not only meets today’s business requirements, it offers a well-designed roadmap to address the challenges of tomorrow in smart data centers and connected buildings by leveraging real-time information and energy optimization to enable efficient infrastructure operations.”

The browser-based PIMTM Software Platform Version 3.0 works with PanView iQ™ (PViQ™) System Hardware to locally or remotely monitor complex physical infrastructure connectivity for management and automation of network processes. This visibility into the physical infrastructure helps quickly identify and resolve connectivity risks, find and reclaim available or underutilized network capacity, and automate real-time and accurate connectivity documentation. The results are minimized network downtime risks (supporting service level agreements), improved network capacity planning and resource provisioning, and overall reduced capital and operating costs.

The PIM™ Software Platform Version 3.0 serves as the foundation for a complete, end-to-end intelligent physical infrastructure. Future capabilities will include enhanced management and monitoring of power, cooling, and space.
The shipments of the Nokia (NYSE: NOK – News) N900, Nokia’s latest mobile computer based on open source Maemo 5 software, have now started. The Nokia N900 will be available in retail stores in November with an estimated retail price of EUR 500, excluding sales taxes and subsidies.

“The Nokia N900 has generated a lot of interest since its public launch in August, which has been reflected in the device preorders,” says Jose-Luis Martinez, Vice President, Nseries, Nokia. “What’s exciting is the Maemo software, which takes its cues from the desktop computer and offers a full browsing experience like no other handset. We believe the Nokia N900 will be a very compelling device for people who are passionate about technology.”

At the heart of the Nokia N900 is its powerful ARM Cortex-A8 processor and up to 1GB of total application memory. Users can browse the internet the way they would on any computer and keep dozens of application windows open simultaneously on the dashboard. The panoramic desktops in the Nokia N900 can be personalized with widgets, contacts and shortcuts. Pictures and videos taken with the 5Mpx Carl Zeiss camera automatically show where they were taken, and users can add their own description tags to make searching the photos even easier. SMS and instant messages are organized as chat flow and people can convenienty switch between the multiple conversation windows. The built-in 32 GB storage is big enough to store up to 7,000 songs or 40 hours of DVD-quality video, and it can be expanded up to 48GB with an external microSD card.

Nokia works closely with the developer community and has recently seen significant innovation happening with Maemo. As a result, people will be able to discover a wide range of games, utilities, themes, panoramic wallpapers and service plug-ins for photo-sharing and messaging for the Nokia N900 through Ovi Store and Maemo Select, starting later in the year. In October Nokia announced official Qt port to Maemo 5. This means developers can use Qt software to target the Nokia N900 and that applications can be easily ported to all Qt’s supported platforms including the next Maemo 6 release as well as Symbian.

The Nokia N900 will initially be available in Europe, Middle-East, Russia and North America. It is also possible to order the device from the Nokia Online Store: http://europe.nokia.com/buy-online

New TAT6254D is an Integrated Circuit Tailored for Economic RFoG Deployment

SANTA ROSA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–TriAccess Technologies, a leading provider of CATV and FTTH (Fiber-To-The-Home) RFICs (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits) for amplifying high-quality multimedia content, today announced the TAT6254D, a new amplifier for Radio Frequency over Glass (RFoG) based fiber access networks. The TAT6254D is tailor-made for RFoG applications and utilizes TriAccess’ proven trans-impedance amplifier (TIA) technology in an optimized two stage single chip solution. The TAT6254D is released for general availability with an 8-week lead time.

The TriAccess TAT6254D incorporates all the downstream receiver requirements for quality RFoG services, providing a single chip solution for R-ONUs (Residential Optical Network Unit). The integration of TIA and output stage amplification for RFoG specific levels enables a highly economic solution. In addition, the dual TIA placement onto a single die assures consistent, manufacturing-repeatable CSO performance and excellent noise.

“The TAT6254D’s low noise and high gain performance optimizes the optical input range for a balance of low cost equipment and full 20km downstream performance,” said Brian Bauer, TriAccess Technologies VP of Marketing. “The accompanying automated gain control – or AGC – reference circuit provides simple, highly cost-effective gain control solutions.”

RFoG is emerging as an effective approach to new construction and network upgrades, primarily because it uses the current cable plant so well and offers a smooth, incremental upgrade path in particularly competitive markets. To maximize the economic viability of RFoG, network operators pay careful attention to the R-ONU, as it is the most expensive piece of equipment in the system on a cost-per-subscriber basis. The TAT6254D is an RFIC amplifier solution that minimizes R-ONU cost while maximizing performance and capability as part of an economic network approach.

“Subscribers continue to demand more services which require cable operators and MSOs to enhance their networks to keep current subscribers and win new customers,” said Chris Day, TriAccess Technologies President and CTO. “The demarcation point into the home is the critical link to ensure a consistent signal that maximizes the value of the FTTH network. The TAT6254D amplifier provides RF services for cable operators using RFoG/DOCSIS, as well as those choosing to deploy other PON architectures.”

The TAT6254D utilizes the latest advances in GaAs technology to create an integrated RFIC that provides significant noise reduction, gain improvement and a stable RF signal for high performance and cost-effective RFoG applications. The TAT6254D is expected to exceed RFoG requirements for future CATV systems.
