Research and Markets: An Optimum Design Approach to Noise and Signal Interference in Optical Fiber Transmission Systems

Research and Markets has announced the addition of John Wiley and Sons Ltd’s new report “Noise and Signal Interference in Optical Fiber Transmission Systems: An Optimum Design Approach” to their offering.

A comprehensive reference to noise and signal interference in optical fiber communications

Noise and Signal Interference in Optical Fiber Transmission Systems is a compendium on specific topics within optical fiber transmission and the optimization process of the system design. It offers comprehensive treatment of noise and intersymbol interference (ISI) components affecting optical fiber communications systems, containing coverage on noise from the light source, the fiber and the receiver. The ISI is modeled with a statistical approach, leading to new useful computational methods. The author discusses the subject with the help of numerous applications and simulations of noise and signal interference theory.

Key features:

  • Complete all-in-one reference on the subject for engineers and designers of optical fiber transmission systems
  • Discusses the physical principles behind several noise contributions encountered in the optical communications systems design, including contributions from the light source, the fiber and the receiver
  • Covers the theory of the ISI for the binary signal, as well as noise statistics
  • Discusses the theory and the mathematical models of the numerous noise components (such as optical noise, photodetection noise and reflection noise)
  • Introduces the frequency description of the ISI and provides new calculation methods based on the characteristic functions
  • Provides useful tools and examples for optimum design of optical fiber transmission networks and systems

This book will serve as a comprehensive reference for researchers, R & D engineers, developers and designers working on optical transmission systems and optical communications. Advanced students in optical communications and related fields will also find this book useful.

Alcatel-Lucent Announces Series of Passively Cooled Fiber to The Building DSLAM That Have Proven and Positive Impact on Green House Gas Emissions

Alcatel-Lucent Expands Portfolio With Eco-Sustainable Broadband Access Gear That Further Reduces Environmental Impact of Fiber-Based Networks

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today highlighted its leading role in bringing to the market innovative technologies that have a proven, positive impact on green house gas emissions.

Two existing technologies – Alcatel-Lucent’s distributed digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) concept, as well as a series of passively cooled fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) DSLAMs – are now complemented by a whole new range of eco-sustainable indoor optical network terminals (ONTs), which are located at the customer’s premise and convert optical signals back into electrical voice, video or data.

The new indoor ONTs consume up to 30 percent less power and are compact – requiring minimal space at the customer’s premise – easy to install, ready to include residential gateway functionalities.

Alcatel-Lucent’s unique distributed DSLAM concept – supported by the Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) family of products – enables service providers to manage up to 24 times fewer nodes in FTTB or fiber-to-the-node architectures, resulting in more cost-effective operations. Additionally, through the use of simplified backplanes, power consumption is reduced by up to 20%.

At home, a number of important savings can be made as well. By introducing FTTB DSLAMs with a so-called “passive cooling” mechanism, up to a 10 percent power savings can be realized compared to traditional FTTB DSLAMs that are actively cooled. An additional benefit lies in the elimination of all noise that traditionally accompanies an active cooling system. Thus this range of Alcatel-Lucent FTTB DSLAMs not only allows end-users to save on their energy bill, it is so quiet it can be installed in virtually any room in a home or office.

“Alcatel-Lucent is deeply committed to ensuring that our customers are able to continuously reduce their carbon footprint while offering consistently high-quality services to their subscribers. Launching innovative and eco-sustainable technologies that really make a difference, is top of mind for us,” said Dave Geary, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s Wireline Networks activities. “The distributed DSLAM concept, as well as the passively cooled FTTB DSLAM and eco-sustainable ONT innovations, offer dramatic energy and cost savings to our customers.”

Sierra Wireless Announces USB 306 and USB 307, The World’s First Mobile Broadband USB Modem for HSPA+ Networks

Sierra Wireless introduces first USB modems for HSPA+ mobile broadband networks

The Sierra Wireless USB 306 and USB 307 provide users with access to the fastest available mobile broadband download speeds in the world

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR – TSX: SW) today introduced the Sierra Wireless USB 306 and the USB 307, the world’s first mobile broadband USB modem for HSPA+ networks. The new modems nearly triple the speed of other mobile broadband devices, with peak download speeds of 21 megabits per second (Mbps), making them the fastest mobile broadband devices available. The Sierra Wireless USB 306 and USB 307 modems are expected to ship within the first half of this year.

HSPA+ network technology significantly increases mobile broadband data speeds, reduces latency, boosts network capacity, and provides a better user experience. The higher bandwidth supports the more data-intensive applications people commonly use on the Internet today, including video and music downloads.

“We recognize that the way people use the Internet has evolved,” said Greg Speakman, vice president of Marketing for Sierra Wireless. “Most people require higher bandwidth from their connections now than they did even two years ago. Sierra Wireless is working hard to stay at the forefront of mobile technology to ensure that our customers can get online and do whatever they need to do, whether from home, work, or somewhere in between.”

The USB 306 is designed for North American and Asia-Pacific regions, operating on the 850, 1900 and 2100 MHz bands, and the USB 307 is optimized for Europe, operating on the 900 and 2100 MHz bands. To provide efficiency and convenience for users, Sierra Wireless TRU-Install(TM) loads the device drivers and Sierra Wireless Watcher(TM) connection manager software onto the computer the first time the USB modem is plugged in. Sierra Wireless Watcher connection manager makes it easy to check the modem’s status, network coverage, and signal strength. Both models are also equipped with a microSD(TM) card slot to provide convenient storage and assist with file transfers on-the-go.

Sierra Wireless USB 306 and USB 307

- Significantly improved data speeds, with peak downlink at 21
Mbps and uplink at 5.76 Mbps, supporting high-bandwidth online
activities like music downloads and video
- Global roaming capabilities support connections around the world,
with backward compatibility to HSPA, UMTS, EDGE, and GPRS
networks where HSPA+ coverage is not available
- microSD(TM) card slot offers convenient storage and file transfer
capabilities, increasing productivity without the need for additional
devices
- TRU-Install(TM) software installation technology steps first-time
users through quick installation of the drivers and full software
client directly from the modem, with no CD required
- Supported by Sierra Wireless Watcher 3.1 connection manager,
which provides quick access to popular features and important
modem information in a convenient, easy-to-use dashboard
- Convenient, flexible usage options available, including a laptop clip
and an USB cable to allow the modem to be clipped to a notebook
display, plus a lanyard loop and carrying pouch for easy storage.

Demonstrations of the USB 306 will be taking place at Mobile World Congress, to be held in Barcelona, Spain, from February 16 to 19. Details regarding on-site displays and demonstrations will be available in the Sierra Wireless Mobile World Congress Newsroom, at www.sierrawireless.com/MWC2009.
