Globalstar Launches Skyhawk M9601 Satellite-Based Global Asset Tracking and Vessel Monitoring System Solution.

Globalstar Announces Satellite-Based Maritime Vessel Monitoring System

Globalstar Provides Commercial Fishing Operators in Latin America With a Reliable and Affordable Way to Satisfy Government Mandated Maritime Vessel Tracking Requirements

Globalstar, Inc. (NasdaqGS:GSAT – News), the world’s largest provider of mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses, governments and individuals, today announced that Globalstar Panama Corp. and leading Simplex data integrator Blue Oceans Satellite Systems Inc. have launched the Skyhawk M9601, a satellite-based global asset tracking and vessel monitoring system (VMS) solution. Available today, the Skyhawk M9601 utilizes the highly reliable Globalstar Simplex data network for transmission of vessel position, and enables commercial fishing operators to meet government vessel monitoring and tracking requirements in coastal waters to more than 300 miles at sea.

The Skyhawk M9601 transmits real-time GPS location monitoring data over the Globalstar Simplex data network to a government-based tracking office, providing maritime authorities with the ability to monitor the location of commercial fishing vessels operating in regulated waters. If a vessel is found to be in restricted waters, then it is contacted with an appropriate message or instructions.

“In Panama the Skyhawk M9601 provides commercial operators with a method of economically meeting the VMS requirements mandated by the government based Autoridad de Recursos Acuaticos de Panama or ARAP,” said Tom Colby, Chief Operating Officer of Globalstar, Inc. Mr. Colby added, “Our previous vessel monitoring solutions have been successful in other maritime markets and last year we began marketing Blue Oceans’ newest product in Panama. In just a few short months Globalstar Panama has managed to capture approximately 40 percent of the Panamanian commercial fishing market. We anticipate continued growth in this business segment and increased market share, and we expect to replicate our success in Panama in other maritime commercial fishing markets in Latin America.”

“We are extremely pleased Globalstar has chosen our Skyhawk M9601 as the go-to technology for today’s VMS markets,” says Paul Anderson, President of Blue Oceans. “The M9601 VMS exceeds the standard set by the United Nations FAO (Fisheries and Oceans) Blue Book for VMS systems, and combined with an attractive price point and highly flexible architecture is well suited for adoption by other countries implementing vessel monitoring programs.”

The Globalstar Simplex data offering is a low cost, one-way satellite data service that permits customers to use satellite modems and integrated back-office management solutions to track maritime-based mobile assets, such as commercial fishing vessels, vehicles, trailers and cargo containers using GPS or other location-based software. Simplex data service can also be used for a wide variety of industrial and security applications to monitor and send information from fixed assets, such as environmental measuring instruments or utility meters, or for reporting the state of various mobile sensor devices and their locations. What’s more, it can provide personal tracking and messaging solutions for commercial and recreational customers using products such as the SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger(tm).

Cricket Communications Begins Nation-Wide Handset Recycling Program

Cricket Introduces National Phone Recycling Program

Portion of the Program’s Proceeds to be Donated to Rebuilding Together

Americans discard approximately 130 million cell phones, less than five percent of which are recycled, totaling about 65,000 tons of waste annually. On this Earth Day 2009, Cricket Communications, Inc, a leading provider of unlimited wireless services, begins a nation-wide handset recycling program. Customers can drop off their unused phones at participating Cricket stores or print a postage-paid shipping label from Cricket’s website (www.mycricket.com/green) and send their phones to the recycling center.

“A typical phone contains materials like arsenic, zinc and lead, therefore throwing out old cell phones is not only wasteful, it’s dangerous. These materials can seep into groundwater or even end up in the air we breathe,” said Tim Ostrowski, vice president for Cricket who is leading the company’s environmental efforts. “We at Cricket feel a responsibility to do what we can to help protect our environment and our communities. By making this recycling program simple and convenient we hope customers will partner with Cricket to do something good for the environment and help raise funds for Rebuilding Together.”

A portion of the proceeds from the program will be donated to Rebuilding Together, the nation’s leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities. Cricket has partnered with Rebuilding Together as a President’s Circle level national sponsor for 2009. Together they are focusing on issues of safety and homeownership among the elderly, the disabled, families with children and those impacted by the rising cost of living and falling social service budgets.

Cricket’s recycling program will be facilitated in conjunction with ReCellular Inc., a leading collector, reseller and recycler of used wireless handsets and accessories. Approximately 50 percent of the cell phones collected by ReCellular are refurbished to near-new condition or otherwise processed for resale. Rebuilt phones are packaged and marketed to users in developing nations of the world where new phones are cost-prohibitive. Products that cannot be rebuilt are disassembled and responsibly recycled. No environmental waste goes to landfills, either directly or through intermediaries, making the process highly effective in reducing or eliminating solid waste. Additional information about ReCellular and its programs can be found at www.recellular.com or www.wirelessrecycling.com.

Anritsu Company Features Digital Broadcasting Test Options for Spectrum Master Handheld Spectrum Analyzer

MS2721B Combines High Performance and DVB Measurement Capability to Provide Users with Handheld Tool for Digital Broadcasting Field Applications

Anritsu Company is featuring a series of digital video broadcasting (DVB) options for its MS2721B Spectrum Master that provides field engineers and technicians responsible for installing and maintaining digital broadcasting systems with a highly accurate, easy to use handheld test instrument that weighs only 6.9 pounds. The combination of the options and high performance of the MS2721B makes the Spectrum Master ideal for conducting area surveys and field maintenance of digital broadcasting equipment.

A DVB-T/H analysis tool supports field strength, modulation analysis MER, constellation, frequency offset, impulse response, and frequency response measurements on terrestrial (DVB-T) and mobile terminal (DVB-H) digital broadcast signals. The option reduces the number of steps necessary to test both types of digital signals, making it simple for users to perform measurements quickly and easily with the MS2721B. The handheld spectrum analyzer also features Auto Reference Level and Detect Parameter buttons so the respective level and parameters can be set automatically.

Covering a wide frequency of 30 MHz to 990 MHz, the Spectrum Master provides the performance necessary for DVB applications. It can conduct fast sweeps automatically over the entire frequency range. The MS2721B also covers a wide dynamic range to ensure high accuracy when measuring digital broadcast signals.

Two other options have been developed for digital broadcast applications. One adds bit error rate (BER) measurement capability to the DVB-T/H measurement capabilities. The MS2721B can measure the BER of actual broadcast signals to evaluate the quality of those signals when the option is installed. BER and packet error ratio (PER) can be measured simultaneously, along with channel power and MER.

A third option accurately calculates the field strength of each incoming signal in single frequency network (SFN) environments. The MS2721B can measure level, delay and DU ratio of each signal with the option. Delay time is more accurately measured with this software because it expands the measurement range by six times using a +/-1 OFDM symbol rather than using conventional methods to conduct the test.

The MS2721B Spectrum Master offers best-in-class performance in a true handheld configuration. It has low phase noise of -100 dBc/Hz @ 10 kHz offsets, best-in-class typical DANL of -163 dBm in a 1 Hz RBW, resolution bandwidth (RBW) range of 1 Hz to 3 MHz and video bandwidth (VBW) range of 1 Hz to 3 MHz. It also has the fastest sweep speeds of any spectrum analyzer in its class.

The prices of the options start at $12,950. The MS2721B is $13,950.
