Gennum Will Demonstrate Multiple 3 Gb/s SDI Products at NAB Conference

Gennum Shows Longest Reach, Highest Performance 3 Gb/s SDI at NAB

Attendees to Experience Next-generation Video Quality, Pre-cursor to 3DTV

Showcasing a full suite of next-generation solutions for broadcast studio equipment, Gennum Corporation (Toronto:GND.TO – News) announced it will demonstrate multiple 3 Gb/s SDI products at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conference. With more than 10 new products aimed at enabling studios to support 3 Gb/s SDI, Gennum’s silicon-based products provide advanced signal integrity functionality to support longer cable length, more robust performance and lower power consumption in advanced broadcast studio equipment. Suppliers of cameras, routers, switchers, monitors and multi-viewers can see the solutions in action as part of Gennum’s exhibition at NAB, Booth #SU911, taking place this week in Las Vegas. The company will also demonstrate its PCI Express (PCIe) bridge solution for 3Gb/s video capture and its ActiveConnect(TM) solution for long reach HDMI connectivity.

“There are significant technical challenges associated with migrating from 1.5 Gb/s HD data rates to 3 Gb/s,” said Martin Rofheart, General Manager and Senior Vice President of Analog and Mixed-Signal Products, at Gennum. “As a pioneer in HD technologies and an established leader in SDI solutions for video broadcast equipment manufacturers, we are committed to helping our customers with this transition. Last year, we introduced the industry’s first integrated 3 Gb/s transmit/receive solution, and honoring our commitment to deliver more 3Gb/s products to our customers, we are now offering a robust, end-to-end 3Gb/s portfolio that maintains maximum signal integrity from capture to playout to editing. In addition to delivering the performance necessary for 3 Gb/s SDI applications, these best-in-class products give our customers the headroom needed to future-proof their environments and support emerging technologies, such as 3DTV.”

Leading Broadcast Equipment Companies Showcase Gennum 3 Gb/s Solutions at NAB

Across the floor at NAB, leading equipment vendors are showcasing products and technology leveraging Gennum’s solutions, including Sony Electronics, Gefen, Nevion (formerly Network Electronics / VPG) and Marshall Electronics.

According to Mr. Hugo Gaggioni, Chief Technology Officer for the Broadcast and Production Systems Division of Sony Electronics, “Gennum continues to drive the development of 3 Gb/s SDI technology and we believe these products will help accelerate Sony’s 3G ready offerings in support of Level B of the SMPTE 425M standard. This year’s NAB is a pivotal time for the industry, as studios need end-to-end solutions with advanced broadcast quality-1080p and beyond. We believe Sony is delivering the most advanced equipment available to achieve the ultimate HD experience.”

Gennum’s new products will be on display and demonstrations will be held at Gennum’s booth highlighting:

- PCIe 3 Gb/s Video Capture: 3 Gb/s video capture using Gennum’s GN4124 PCIe bridge solution, showcasing robust 3 Gb/s video across a 15-meter PCIe cable using Gennum’s GN1406 PCIe extender

- 3 Gb/s Serial Routing and Distribution: Announced yesterday, Gennum’s new serial routing and distribution products deliver best-in-class power consumption (55 percent reduction) and performance (50 percent improvement). Gennum’s new GS2984 equalizer, GS2985 reclocker, and GS2989 cable driver combine to permit 3 Gb/s data transmission over 101 serial passes error-free, showcasing the robustness of the solution to deliver error-free data (more detail at: www.gennum.com/3GSDI)

- 3 Gb/s Video Optical Modules: Gennum’s new video optical module is shown receiving 3 Gb/s data over a 60km link, error-free. It is the world’s first 3 Gb/s optical module that can enable “zero penalty” pathological performance.

- 3 Gb/s Receiver: Gennum’s new GS2971 receiver is showcased receiving 3Gb/s data over 150 meters of coaxial cable, the longest reach in the industry. The GS2971 receiver offers integrated equalizer, deserializer, and audio de-embedding, delivering a 45 percent reduction in power consumption and 50 percent board space savings for video broadcast applications.

- 3 Gb/s Serial Routing and Distribution Comparison: Gennum’s previous 297x family of 3 Gb/s receivers is compared to the new second generation 298x family of 3 Gb/s receivers. Gennum shows a live comparison of the power and performance improvements leveraging its new 298x family, highlighting significantly longer cable length (150 meters vs. 100 meters), lower power (more than 40 percent reduction) and lower output jitter (exact numbers TBD) over its previous 297x family.

All the solutions above provide support for SMPTE 425M Level A and Level B.

- ActiveConnect(TM) Solution: Gennum’s line of HDMI products are showcased using 1080p Blu-ray source video through two 65 meter CAT-6 cables to an HDMI display. This solution is ideal for broadcast video applications that require long reach connectivity over coax or CAT-x cabling, allowing existing infrastructures to be leveraged.

Gennum Demonstrates 3Gb/s Video Capture over PCIe, Delivers Low Cost 1080p/60 Solution

Extending its offerings into advanced interfaces for 3Gb/s SDI video, Gennum will demonstrate PCIe video capture leveraging the company’s GN4124 PCIe bridge and GS2971 3Gb/s receiver products. The demonstration shows how Gennum products can be implemented to enable the use of standard PCs for 3 Gb/s SDI video capture. Until now, broadcast studios have employed costly proprietary equipment based upon costly field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to handle the performance demands of 3 Gb/s SDI.

Leveraging a complete 3 Gb/s PCIe subsystem based on Gennum’s standard parts, the demonstration shows 1080p/60 video being captured and moved to a PC for advanced editing, special effects, graphic overlays or control functions. It is then run across a 15 meter PCIe cable using Gennum’s GN1406 retimed repeater solution with clock and data recovery (CDR) device. Gennum’s standard product approach enables designers to eliminate the need for a large, costly FPGA and instead enables the use of a smaller, lower cost FPGA, dramatically reducing overall system cost and power consumption while speeding time-to-market.

About the 3Gb/s SMPTE Standard
Over the past few years, the demand for high-definition content at higher bit rates has escalated. Broadcast studios and other video production facilities have wanted to extend the life of their infrastructure by using the same hardware currently used for HD-SDI. Thus, the standards bodies, SMPTE and ITU, ratified a series of new 3Gb/s SDI standards, the SMPTE 424M (physical interface), SMPTE 425M (format mapping) and ITU-R BT.1120-3-2005, that allows for the use of the same 75-ohm coaxial cable for transmission as currently in use. This new standard, generally referred to as 3Gb/s SDI, enables higher resolution of pictures required for 1080p 50/60.

Red Bend Software Announces Industry-Leading vDirect Mobile(TM) Device Management Client Software Successfully Completed Interoperability Testing

Red Bend Software Successfully Completes Open Mobile Alliance’s Rigorous Interoperability Testing

Red Bend Software, the market leader in Mobile Software Management (MSM), today announced that its industry-leading vDirect Mobile(TM) device management (DM) client software successfully completed interoperability testing in the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Enhanced Environment Test (EET). OMA’s EET, which was held simultaneously in Dusseldorf, Germany and Beijing from March 23-27, 2009, was hosted by Vodafone and China Mobile

This event was the first time that OMA’s Enhanced Environment Test was used. EET events are operator-led live network environment test events designed to showcase vendors’ handsets to the involved operators and invited media. The end result proves implementations in a real operator network environment. vDirect Mobile completed compliance testing for the following OMA standards enablers:

  • Device Management (DM) 1.1.2 and 1.2.1
  • Firmware Update Management Object (FUMO) 1.0.

“As a leader in developing and promoting OMA DM standards, Red Bend is dedicated to ensuring that our mobile software management solutions are interoperable with the broadest range of OMA DM-compliant servers and mobile data service enablers,” said Yoram Salinger, CEO of Red Bend Software. “Our ongoing participation in OMA’s test events including the successful completion of the latest interoperability testing ensures that our customers can meet operators’ growing requirements for standards-based device management of any mobile device on any network worldwide. This international roaming scenario between Vodafone and China Mobile demonstrates this.”

vDirect Mobile is the industry’s leading independent DM client that is interoperable with any DM server supporting standards from the OMA. vDirect Mobile makes it easier and more cost effective for manufacturers to quickly integrate standards-based DM functionality into mobile devices, enabling faster time to market. In addition to DM and FUMO, vDirect Mobile offers full compliance with the Software Component Management Object (SCOMO) and WiMAX MO.

“OMA EETs allow us to improve the quality of our enabler specifications by having our members bring their experiences and test implementations back to the OMA,” said Rick Brunner, Chairman of the OMA Board IOP Committee. “Proving interoperability with other implementations of OMA specifications can help companies like Red Bend Software to promote global adoption of mobile data services. This also allows OMA to release a higher quality service enabler to the market because we have identified any problems with these enablers through the test process.”

About the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA)
The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) delivers open specifications for creating interoperable services that work across countries, different networks, fixed and mobile terminals.
