Management

Capitoline CQM looks at data centre operational management and the policies, procedures and documentation that are used to manage the enterprise and performs a gap analysis to identify what procedures are in place and what is missing and then launches a plan to fill in the missing gaps.

Guideline Standards: ISO 27000, ISO 50001, ISO 9000, ISO 14000, EU Code of Conduct

This is not necessarily an audit against these complete standards but a comparison against best practice management techniques and importantly the written policies and procedures that are most relevant to the data centre environment.

Sites that meet all the required operational management policies and procedures are awarded the Capitoline DCOM Site Quality Mark.

Sites that meet the energy management monitoring requirements of ISO 50001 are awarded the Capitoline site Energy Management Mark.

People

Development of the site operational management techniques and the subsequent training of the staff go hand-in-hand.

Capitoline offers both technical design and operational management training.

Data Centre Design, DCD, is a 3-day course on the techniques of correct design and sizing of power, air conditioning, connectivity and related facilities items.

Data Centre Operational Management, DCOM, is a 2-day course that course that guides people through the operational management procedures for a data centre.

Guideline standards: TIA 942, EN 50600, ISO 27000

DCD and DCOM can be taken together to achieve the Data Centre Expert, DCE® qualification. The DCE certification is a Level 5 award with the European Qualification Framework, EQF.

Installations

Capitoline can audit existing sites to judge their compliance against the TIA 942 Tier rating scheme and also to monitor Health & Safety issues, energy reduction strategies and business best practices. A gap analysis technique leads to a report detailing any shortcomings and the route to achieve the desired compliance level. Certification for the site is provided by Capitoline.

Guideline Standards: TIA 942, Green Grid metrics, EU Health & Safety Directives

Designs

The best time to audit a data centre is at the design stage! Capitoline will study the architectural, electrical and mechanical plans for the site and judge them against meeting the original design intent and compliance to a TIA 942 Tier level or other agreed Standard.

Guideline Standards: TIA 942

A gap analysis technique leads to a report detailing any shortcomings and the route to achieve the desired compliance level. Certification for the site is provided by Capitoline.

Capitoline partner, Barry Elliott, said, “We are not inventing any new data centre standards but just offering an independent certification scheme from a professional engineering consultancy against the existing relevant standards.”

Capitoline LLP is an independent engineering consultancy specialising in audit, design and training for data centres and computer rooms.

Nistica, NTT Electronics and Fujikura Joint Development to Multiple Twin WSS Modules for Transmission of 100 Gb/s Channels and Future Super-Channel Formats at Higher Capacity

Nistica and NTT Electronics Announce Joint Development Program for High Port-Count Wavelength Selective Switches

Innovative optical component from NTT Electronics and advanced optical module technology from Nistica is being commercialized with manufacturing excellence from Fujikura

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. & YOKOHAMA, Japan–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

Nistica, a Fujikura subsidiary supplying agile optical networking solutions, and NTT Electronics (NEL), a global leader in integrated optical and electronics technologies, today announced their entry into twin wavelength selective switches designed for next-generation route-and-select architectures. Nistica, NEL and Fujikura are co-operating in the joint development of multiple twin WSS modules optimized for transmission of 100 Gb/s channels and future super-channel formats at higher capacity. These cost-effective, small form-factor products will be manufactured by Fujikura Optical Vietnam, Fujikura’s manufacturing subsidiary.

“NEL has commercialized optical and electronics components based on key innovations from NTT. Innovation should emerge when different technologies are harmonized. I am expecting that this collaboration will expand the product portfolio of NEL before long,” said Dr. Hiroshi Yoshimura, President and Chief Executive Officer, NTT Electronics.

Echoing the sentiment, Takamasa Kato, Chairman of Nistica Board of Directors and Fujikura Executive Vice-President, complimented the teams: “Joint development efforts that bring together diverse skills are critical in meeting customer needs. Fujikura’s established manufacturing systems will ease the flow of these high-end optical modules into the market in record time.”

Optical Networking System vendors are demanding building blocks for network nodes that satisfy the upcoming needs for colorless, directionless, contentionless and gridless (CDCG) applications. Several key customers have designed twin WSS modules in their system architectures, and high-volume applications are expected in the second half of 2013.

“Nistica’s experience in developing stable low port-count WSS modules, Fujikura’s experience in advanced manufacturing techniques and key technological advances from NEL have enabled the development of high-performance high port-count twin modules that will fit in a single-slot,” remarked Ashish Vengsarkar, CEO of Nistica. “Customers have been impressed with the versatility of these building blocks in various software-defined configurations.”

Daryl Inniss, VP and practice leader, communications components at Ovum, remarked, “Cloud computing and video applications are driving high transmission rates and new architectures. As a result, carriers are demanding high-performance, high-density, high-flexibility, and low-cost solutions. A high-port count WSS with flexible-grid technology is a key building block in meeting their needs.”

Nistica will demonstrate the operation of twin WSS modules at the Optical Fiber Communications conference (OFC) being held in Anaheim, California, March 18 – 22, 2013. At OFC, Nistica Chief Technology Officer Thomas Strasser will chair a panel on The Future of ROADM Technology: Deployment and Functionality and teach a short course on ROADM Technologies and Network Applications (SC261).

NEL will update the key products and roadmaps of optical and electronic components including WSS produced in collaboration with Nistica for 100G digital-coherent networks at OFC.

OFS Launches New Series of Few-Mode Fibers for Space Division Multiplexing

OFS Announces The Launch Of Few-Mode Fibers Series

Designed for Space Division Multiplexing

ANAHEIM, Calif., March 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — OFC/ NFOEC 2013, Booth 2627 — OFS, a leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of innovative fiber optic network products, today announced the launch of a series of few-mode fibers designed for space division multiplexing.

“Few-mode fibers can be used for space division multiplexing where information is transmitted simultaneous on several modes thereby further increasing the transmission capacity of an optical fiber,” says Robert Lingle Jr., Director of Fiber Design and Systems Research at OFS. “Spatial multiplexing on few mode fibers is one of the very hot research topics at this year’s Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC),” he adds.

The few-mode fibers offered include three versions: a two-mode fiber with graded-index core, which has a low differential group delay; a step-index two-mode fiber; and a step-index four-mode fiber.

“The OFS few-mode fibers have been developed as a part of OFS participation in the European Union supported collaborative Research & Development project MODE-GAP,” says Bera Palsdottir, Manager of Incubation Center OFS Denmark. “The fibers have been tested by our business partners at ModeGap, already resulting in several publications, with the demonstration of transmission of 57.6 terabit per second (Tbps) using 6 spatial modes being the most impressive result thus far,” she adds.

More details on the ModeGap project can be found on the website http://modegap.eu/
