Datatel MOX Released for General Availability

Beta Testers Go Live on Datatel Mobile Access

Datatel announced today the general availability of Datatel Mobile Access (MOX™), a mobile application for parents, prospects, students, faculty, and staff of higher education institutions to obtain academic and administrative information using iPhone and iPod touch devices. Quinnipiac University and Marietta College, participants in the MOX beta program, were the first schools to go live on MOX last week. MOX is powered by DubMeNow’s cross-platform, patent-pending software technology for smartphone information sharing.

The Quinnipiac University and Marietta College MOX applications securely provide all of the institutions’ constituents with finger-tip access to class schedules, class rosters, specific school events, and administrative information. Other interested parties within the institutions’ communities, such as parents, prospects, and alumni, also can download MOX to receive school news and events, view detailed maps and buildings on campus, and access important campus phone numbers and other key contact information.

“Most students today receive their information from a mobile device, not just from e-mail, as was true just a few years ago,” said Matthew Romeo, director of university applications at Quinnipiac. “Our administrators who tested MOX loved the student notification feature that can segment messages to specific people or groups over their smartphones. They know that when they send out a message over MOX, there is a much better chance that constituents will see it and be advised of critical notices.

“MOX also is a great marketing support tool for Quinnipiac,” continued Mr. Romeo. “Prospective students and their parents can download MOX from the iTunes Store and have in their hands detailed maps to navigate the campus, real-time news and events to get a feeling for our culture, and important phone numbers, in case they need help.

“For freshmen entering in the fall, MOX will be a great stress reducer because they will be able to find their courses, professors, class information, and locations instantly using the mapping feature,” said Mr. Romeo.

Initially available for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch, MOX will work on the most popular mobile platforms by the end of this year, including BlackBerry and Google Android. Windows Mobile, Nokia Symbian, and Palm Pre will be available in early 2011. MOX can be downloaded and used at no charge from the iTunes Store by anyone wishing to get a firsthand look at how Datatel schools successfully have incorporated key information into the campus experience. Simply type “MOX” into the iTunes search to start your mobile experience. A brief video about Datatel MOX is available at http://bit.ly/aC4gbs.

MOX can extend the Datatel Intelligent Learning Platform (ILP), a cohesive teaching and learning solution that addresses the costly fragmentation and other deficiencies of traditional stand-alone learning management systems.

Other features of Datatel Mobile include the ability to:

Easily exchange contact information from phone to phone, including email, phone, address, Facebook and LinkedIn profiles, IM, and more;

Receive personalized notifications such as security alerts and library past-due notices;

Receive automatic address book updates whenever contacts update their info (new email, social network, address, etc.);

Access information about public and private campus events and about events limited to specific groups such as students, faculty, and staff;

Personalize newsfeeds from the institution; and

Follow a GPS-enabled campus map to classroom buildings and other facilities.

MatchGraph Helps Develop Understanding of Math and Science Concepts

PASCO® scientific announced MatchGraph™ for the iPhone 4 today at the International Society for Technology in Education conference running today through Wednesday. MatchGraph is an engaging and fun way for children and adults alike to develop their understanding of math and science concepts.

The object of the game is to rotate the phone to produce a graph that matches a target graph on the screen as closely as possible. The score is based on how closely the user’s movements match the target graph. Each deviation lowers the starting score of 100. Users have up to 10 seconds to complete a challenge before the game stops.

The game offers four different challenges, each one more difficult than the other. The user simply selects a target graph from one of the four options at the bottom of the screen and presses the start button to begin graphing the device’s rotational motion. MatchGraph takes advantage of the iPhone 4′s built-in gyroscope for six-axis motion sensing.

Fun and games aside, MatchGraph also has an educational benefit. Users learn how to analyze and interpret graphs and develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between rotational position and time, improving their scores in the process.

MatchGraph requires the iPhone 4 and iOS 4. It can be downloaded for 99 cents at the App Store(SM). Learn more about MatchGraph by visiting www.pasco.com.

- QS World University Rankings now an iPhone App.

- Top 500 Universities in the World Contactable at the Touch of a Button

The world’s most popular university ranking (viewed over 18million times on http://www.topuniversities.com) is now even more accessible to its diverse users, thanks to an innovative new iPhone App. The QS World University Rankings App, designed for students, parents and ranking fanatics, allows users to conduct their own study destination research by providing global, regional and subject-based rankings as well as profiles and contact details of 500 of the world’s top universities.

QS World University Rankings can be viewed and interpreted in three different ways – globally, regionally and by subject area. Users who have reviewed the App said it is, “Very thorough and organised”, and also “Great to be able to see info about the universities I’m interested in all in one place”.

Marcos Angelides, Online Marketing Manager at QS and co-creator of the App said, “Every year, QS surveys over 40,000 undergraduate and Masters applicants who register on topuniversities.com to meet universities face-to-face. Results revealed that they want to discuss university choices with their friends whilst on the move.”

The iPhone App is the first of a series of initiatives to be launched by QS in the lead up to the release of the 2010 QS World University Rankings; it is free to download on iTunes. A demo of the App can be viewed here (http://www.topuniversities.com/videos/iphone-app)

MacroSolve Launches iPhone App for Public Schools Market; Believed to Be First in the Nation

MacroSolve, Inc. (OTC.BB:MCVE – News), a leading provider of mobile business apps, announced today the launch of a mobile app that serves the needs of public schools. Edison Preparatory School, a public grades 6-12 school in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is believed to be the first public school in the nation with its own branded mobile app. The app is created by MacroSolve and distributed by Tulsa-based Waller & Company Public Relations.

Edison will use the app to communicate with students, parents, and the local community. The app will provide immediate, real-time information to the Edison school community regarding school schedules, extracurricular events, volunteer opportunities and many other pertinent school activities.

“Schools have an ever increasing need to connect with parents, alumni, local businesses and students more effectively and efficiently,” said MacroSolve president and CEO Clint Parr. “With every age group owning smartphones and downloading apps by the billions this year, we have the means to create an innovative way to inform, coordinate and attract a more vast community of interest, which will bring more resources to principals and administrators. As an added bonus, content for the app can be managed by the students themselves, creating projects of student interest and learning in the classroom.”

Barrett Waller, president and CEO of Waller & Company Public Relations, added, “We’ve signed on to become a reseller of MacroSolve’s mobile apps because we see tremendous potential for their widespread use in a range of markets, including school systems. It makes our schools more efficient and strengthens the community bond between schools, their students and the public. We believe we can support a national roll-out of this school app.”

The app will be available as soon as May 4 to Edison students and families on the iPhone app store. Access for users of other mobile devices, including BlackBerry, Google Android, and Palm, will be phased in over the coming months.

“This is a wonderful tool that addresses the way we communicate today,” added Edison Principal Stacey Vernon. “It enables us to make real-time announcements that we can broadcast immediately. It is much more cost effective than traditional communications channels. We will reduce the use of paper and create an environment in which our very tech-savvy students can also participate in the creation and upkeep of content.”

About MacroSolve

Blackboard Inc. (NASDAQ:BBBB – News) today announced the launch of its customized Blackboard Mobile Learn™ app for iPad on the App Store. The app recreates the course experience of Blackboard Learn™, the leading online teaching and learning platform, and lets students check grades and assignments, add discussion board comments and blog posts, email instructors and classmates and much more.

With a user experience and Multi-Touch interface that leverages the unique iPad, the app offers an immersive and engaging way for students to access their course work and interactive learning opportunities.

“The iPad can fundamentally change the way students navigate their educational experience,” said Michael L. Chasen, Blackboard’s president and CEO. “We think there’s a lot of potential for mobile learning to drive greater student engagement, and we want to be at the forefront of bringing those innovations to institutions and users.”

Blackboard has made the application free on certain Wi-Fi devices, beginning with the iPad, in an effort to help institutions get started quickly in mobile and to encourage use of the iPad as a learning tool.

In June, institutions will be able to expand support for Blackboard Mobile Learn to a broad range of device platforms — including iPhone OS, Android and BlackBerry — through an annual license that will enable native applications for each that will be available for download by students and faculty at mobile application stores.

Alternatively, schools interested in experimenting with mobile learning on their campus for no additional charge will be able to enable Wi-Fi access to Blackboard Mobile Learn on devices such as the iPhone® and iPod touch® and, through a special partnership with Sprint (NYSE:S – News), on select smartphones powered by the Now Network™.

Given the secure information that can be accessed with the Blackboard Mobile Learn application, it must be enabled by institutions first before it is accessible to students with their information. Institutions can enable access by installing the free Blackboard Mobile Web Services Building Block™, which is available for download today at Blackboard’s client support Web site, Behind the Blackboard™.

Blackboard Mobile Learn is available for U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada higher education and professional education clients on Blackboard Learn Releases 8, 9 and higher. Details on availability for K-12 and international markets, as well as for previous versions of Blackboard Learn and the WebCT and ANGEL platforms, will follow.

The Blackboard Mobile Learn app for iPad is available for free from the App Store on iPad or at http://www.itunes.com/appstore/.

Messiah College Deploys ADC’s InterReach Fusion System for High-Performance In-Building Cellular Coverage

Multi-phase Approach Allows Easy Expansion to Other Academic and Residence Buildings Via Fiber
Five Large Academic Buildings Covered in First Phase
“Reverse 911” System Can Text-message Students and Staff in Emergencies

MINNEAPOLIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–ADC (NASDAQ: ADCT – News) (www.adc.com) today announced that Messiah College, a nationally-ranked Christian college in Grantham, Pennsylvania, has deployed its InterReach Fusion® indoor distributed antenna system (DAS) to provide strong and consistent indoor cellular coverage. The initial deployment covers five academic buildings, but this is the first of a multi-phase approach that will ultimately cover all major academic areas as well as residence facilities on the 471-acre campus.

The InterReach Fusion system was selected over other solutions because it offered superior flexibility and was more cost-effective to expand over time.

“We wanted to consolidate all of the head-end equipment at one location, but the other vendors wanted us to deploy donor antennas on every building we covered, and they couldn’t support the multimode fiber we have in some buildings,” said Chris Culbert, director of ITS/Telecom for Messiah College. ”With the Fusion system, we can use just one donor antenna for each carrier and link all the other locations via our single-mode and multimode fiber. That makes it much easier to expand the system as we roll out additional phases.”

The InterReach Fusion DAS supports voice and data users of AT&T and Verizon services, who represent more than 95 percent of the campus user base. The system will provide greater convenience for students and staff, but it also adds an extra layer of security for emergency communications. With the initial deployment complete, the college’s “reverse-911” system can automatically send out text alerts to all student and staff cell phones if an emergency notification is needed.

The initial deployment was completed in three weeks during the summer of 2009 and covers five buildings: the Eisenhower Campus Center, Jordan Science Center, Sollenberger Sports Center, Kline Hall, and Boyer Hall. ADC contractors deployed two InterReach Fusion main hubs at the head-end in Boyer Hall, and added five expansion hubs and 40 remote antenna units to provide coverage in the other buildings. For future expansion, it will be easy to add capacity at the head-end and then deploy additional expansion hubs and antenna units in other buildings.

“From large universities such as Michigan State and Duke University to smaller institutions like Messiah College and Ave Maria University, ADC’s InterReach products have been chosen for in-building cellular coverage on college campuses because they deliver consistent coverage, easy scalability, and superior performance,” said John Spindler, vice president of product management at ADC. “Our Fusion system in particular is ideal for Messiah College because it can use existing fiber plant and is very easy and cost effective to expand.”

Managed Service Delivery and Education-Centric Services Proves Most Cost-Effective Solution

INDIANAPOLIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) has selected Education Networks of America, Inc., (ENA) for a four-year contract, with one additional four-year renewal option, to provide Internet access and managed network and telecommunication services for members of the IDOE E-Rate Consortium.

The Consortium is comprised of over 350 public and private school corporations throughout the state. Through competitive selection processes, ENA has provided these services to the department since 2005.

The demand for robust and reliable Internet access to support critical instructional and administrative applications has risen dramatically as Indiana schools transition to digital applications, such as online content, distance learning, student data management, school community portals and more.

“At a time when Indiana’s schools are demanding more and more bandwidth for critical teaching and learning strategies, ENA is helping us meet the 21st century needs of Indiana students and educators by providing a robust, scalable and cost-effective statewide network that is positioned to evolve as the network access requirements of Indiana’s schools continue to grow exponentially,” said Dr. John B. Keller, Director of Learning Technologies for the IDOE.

Since ENA was first awarded the statewide contract, ENA has been able to increase the total Internet access available to Indiana schools by over 700 percent while simultaneously cutting the overall price of service, creating cost savings for the State and participating school corporations.

In addition to compelling price advantages, IDOE selected ENA because of the additional value the company brings to Consortium members through providing education-centric services including face-to-face consultative support for every school corporation, as well as active partnerships with schools and educational entities across the state. As outlined in the letter of selection memorandum, “ENA understands that the core business of schools is student learning and that bandwidth is a mission-critical factor in meeting this goal. This understanding has resulted in ENA’s involvement in the broader educational conversation as they constantly seek to support key education initiatives in the state.”

“We are honored to continue serving Indiana’s students and educators,” said David Pierce, president and CEO of ENA. “Service is ENA’s top priority, indeed the blueprint of our business model, and this new contract is certainly a validation of that. We look forward to proving our commitment to delivering unbeatable service and exceptional network solutions to Indiana’s K–12 community for at least another four years.”

ABOUT EDUCATION NETWORKS OF AMERICA

ENA provides managed network and communication services to customers in the education, library and government sectors. Their scalable solutions facilitate collaboration, increase productivity and decrease the cost of information management through the convergence of data, voice and video technologies. ENA currently manages multiple statewide and district-wide education and library networks successfully serving over 5,000 end sites, 560 school districts, 230 libraries, more than 2.5 million students, teachers and administrators and more than 6.2 million librarians and patrons. Empowered by their networks, ENA’s customers can focus on what matters most: preparing students, strengthening communities and leading enterprises into the 21st century.

Northwestern University First to Deploy VidyoConferencing to its Academic Community for “Telepresence-Quality” Video Communications Over the Internet

HACKENSACK, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Vidyo®, Inc., the first company to deliver personal telepresence, today introduced the first affordable HD video conferencing and collaboration system to enable all members of a University community to communicate and collaborate quickly and naturally in HD quality via the Internet on desktop and room system video communications. The VidyoCampus™ program simplifies buying a VidyoConferencing™ system for large scale university deployments by offering a single site license that covers all components of Vidyo’s conferencing systems at a price that is affordable to any school’s budget. Northwestern University is currently using the Vidyo system at its Feinberg School of Medicine and will soon be deploying to its broader community of researchers, instructors, students and staff.

“Vidyo’s solution will let us offer our entire academic community a high-quality, cost-effective platform on which to communicate and collaborate,” said Mort Rahimi, Northwestern University’s Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Technology Officer. ”The VidyoCampus systems allow us to integrate the best-of-class desktop video services from Vidyo with our significant investment in room-based H.323 systems in our classrooms and conference rooms. Facilitating real-time, face-to-face collaboration is essential to the success of our research teams, and it also opens new opportunities for our University to provide education to a global community.”

“The Vidyo solution provides more than a reliable and easy to use desktop video-conferencing environment,” according to Nathaniel Soper, Loyal and Edith Davis Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. “Vidyo extends our ability to broadcast training from our most innovative campus operating rooms throughout the medical center and to physicians’ desktops literally anywhere in the world. In addition, we have begun integrating information from select Operating Room equipment into our Vidyo broadcasts. In the future, this may allow us to involve and collaborate with other physicians unable to be physically present. Innovation like this, that brings better information to everyone involved, helps us provide better care today and improved surgical process for tomorrow. We look forward to integrating Vidyo into our clinical and educational environment as another important tool for us.”

“For universities who thought telepresence-quality video conferencing was beyond affordable reach, Vidyo now makes it possible. It is the only solution to satisfy all of the key conditions and capabilities that need to be considered before making an investment,” said Rob Hughes, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales. “Cost per user, scalability, accessibility, and the quality of the video, especially in terms of latency and multipoint performance, are the primary reasons that universities, like Northwestern, are now looking to Vidyo for a better solution than what was previously available.”

The VidyoCampus Program

The VidyoCampus program makes it easy and affordable for universities to deploy VidyoConferencing to every desktop in the University’s collaboration community by offering a single site license that represents a bundle of: VidyoRouter™ appliances, VidyoRouter multipoint conferencing port software licenses, VidyoPortal™ seat software licenses, and VidyoDesktop™ client downloads.

The solution consists of:

VidyoDesktop, a software client for Mac or Windows (with Linux coming soon)

VidyoPortal, an Intel x86-based appliance that provides web-based management services

VidyoRouter, an Intel x86-based appliance that provides the software-based multi-point ports, call processing and routing functionality.

Also available are the optional VidyoRoom™ systems as well as the VidyoGateway™ which enables connectivity between the VidyoConferencing system and legacy H.323 or SIP endpoints. VidyoCampus site licenses are priced to be affordable in any school’s budget and are tiered by the total number of students enrolled at the university.

The Vidyo Difference: Next Generation Video Conferencing

One remarkable aspect to Vidyo’s solution is its ability to deliver high definition (HD) multi-point performance over the public Internet from standard Macs and PCs, utilizing software-enabled ports on its VidyoRouter. Vidyo’s unique architecture, built from the ground up, is the first in a new generation of software solutions that leverages the H.264/Scalable Video Coding (SVC) video compression standard. This allows VidyoConferencing to easily scale, servicing thousands of collaborators for a fraction of the cost of competitors’ solutions. Legacy MCU-based solutions do not scale well since they are hardware limited, require costly QoS enhanced lines to achieve mediocre performance, and are heavily laden with up front equipment expense.

About Vidyo, Inc.

Vidyo, Inc. pioneered Personal Telepresence enabling natural, multi-point videoconferences on desktop computers and room systems. Vidyo’s patented VidyoRouter architecture delivers the only available H.264/Scalable Video Coding (SVC) solution that eliminates an MCU while delivering the industry’s best error resilience (click here to see a video) and lowest latency videoconferencing solution over the Internet and wireless networks. VidyoTechnology™ is used by Hitachi, Teliris, ShoreTel and other major organizations and enterprises. Vidyo is privately held and has raised $45M from Menlo Ventures, Sevin-Rosen, Rho Ventures and Star Ventures. Learn more at www.vidyo.com.
