Sycamore Introduces Unique Mobile Broadband Optimization Solution

IQstream Adaptive Content Optimization for the RAN Helps Mobile Operators Improve Service Delivery Economics and Enhance Subscribers’ Multimedia Experience

Sycamore Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCMR – News), a leader in intelligent bandwidth management solutions for fixed line and mobile network operators worldwide, today announced the introduction of IQstreamTM, a unique answer to the service challenges posed by rapid mobile data growth in the Radio Access Network (RAN). The Sycamore IQstream mobile broadband optimization solution helps operators ensure a superior multimedia experience for their subscribers by dramatically reducing congestion in the access network caused by rising demand for Internet video and other rich media applications. At the same time, IQstream significantly lowers the cost of delivering mobile broadband services by freeing up capacity in the cost-sensitive RAN.

Powered by Adaptive Content OptimizationTM technology and advanced learning algorithms, the IQstream solution dynamically adapts to mobile data traffic patterns, including peak usage periods and flash events. This allows operators to cost-efficiently meet growing subscriber expectations for a high quality multimedia experience while alleviating capacity constraints in a high-cost part of their network. As a result, operators can significantly reduce operational expenses, defer costly network upgrades, and dramatically improve the economics of their mobile data offerings.

“IQstream is an innovative new initiative from Sycamore that builds upon the company’s heritage of solving complex networking problems with adaptive, real-time service intelligence,” said Daniel E. Smith, president and chief executive officer, Sycamore Networks. “IQstream leverages Sycamore’s proven networking expertise and long-standing relationships with mobile operators worldwide to address the critical challenge of RAN congestion and the attendant implications for subscriber quality of experience, service profitability, and backhaul capacity planning.”

Key benefits of the IQstream solution include:

* Superior delivery of rich media content, particularly high quality video in the RAN
* Improved quality of experience for subscribers during peak usage periods
* Optimal utilization of existing network infrastructure
* Enhanced ability to serve large numbers of subscribers simultaneously accessing popular broadband content
* Simplified mobile broadband network planning and backhaul dimensioning

“The explosion of rich media content such as Internet video is creating massive congestion issues in mobile networks. This trend will only accelerate as end-user devices become increasingly more powerful and more and more subscribers consume new bandwidth-intensive applications,” said Kevin Oye, vice president of systems and technology, Sycamore Networks. “IQstream takes a unique approach to optimizing video and other rich media content traversing the RAN, employing sophisticated adaptive algorithms that self-tune in response to dynamic traffic behavior to ensure consistent service performance as mobile broadband usage patterns, applications, and devices evolve.”

IQstream can be easily and selectively deployed at network congestion hot spots for rapid improvements in service performance and immediate operational savings. Unlike core-based optimization schemes, Sycamore’s patent-pending optimization technology directly improves utilization of existing HSPA RAN infrastructure while maintaining full transparency to 3GPP radio network protocols and operations including critical core-based functions such as billing, policy control, and lawful intercept.

IQstream will be generally available in Q4 2010.

Deltenna’s Wireless Broadband Enabler (WiBE) Delivers Reliable 2Mbps Connection to Rural Areas

Device’s smart antenna technology delivers 30-times data throughput and 5-times range of 3G dongle

A device to deliver broadband to rural areas that are far from the phone exchange was launched today by UK based Deltenna.

The small, sleek gadget, called the WiBE (Wireless Broadband Enabler), uses the 3G mobile network to create a 2Mbps web hotspot, even when a 3G mobile phone wouldn’t register a signal.

An internal WiFi router enables users to connect laptops, smartphones or VoIP phones.

In areas of weak signal it delivers a data throughput 30-times greater than a 3G USB modem dongle. And the connection range is up to five-times that of the 3G dongle.

This improvement is achieved through Deltenna’s patented antennas and alignment algorithms, which beam steer the device’s receivers.

The device automatically tests each mobile cell in range to determine the fastest available download speed and configures its aerials to achieve the best possible connection and block any interference.

The device’s maximum throughput is 7.2Mbps and extensive rural usage tests in the UK demonstrated an average download speed of 2.8 Mbps.

The WiBE will be sold to OEMs and operators. It was created to bring broadband to emerging economies and rural areas, where there is access to a mobile network but not high speed DSL lines.

Deltenna will also release a 4G mobile network device in 2011. This will use LTE technology to reach typical rural broadband speeds of 50Mbps and above.

Recent research by the global broadband benchmarking organisation, Epitiro, highlighted mobile broadband users accessing the network on a cell phone or 3G dongle typically receive a download speed lower that 1Mbps.

Iain Wood of Epitiro said: “Rural broadband consumers in Europe and the US suffer low speeds over copper wiring as a result of being a distance from the exchange. This challenge of achieving higher speeds lies with the implementation of new technologies to ‘the last mile’ be they wired or wireless.”

Andrew Fox, CEO of Deltenna said: “There are still millions of people throughout Europe and the US for whom fast broadband is a myth. The WiBE seeks out distant, base stations and, like you would with a set top TV aerial, adjusts and fine tunes its antennas to get the perfect signal.”

Imec’s cognitive baseband radio to support 4G and broadband access to multiple services

Imec introduces a cognitive baseband radio (COBRA) architecture targeting 4G requirements at up to 1Gbit/s throughput and multiple asynchronous concurrent streams (for instance simultaneous digital broadcasting reception and high-speed internet access). The low-cost, flexible architecture answers a new trend in wireless communication where terminals give their users ubiquitous broadband access to a multitude of services.

COBRA is an interesting architecture for future mobile handsets and all kinds of battery-powered wireless connectivity devices, as well as for base-stations for small cells. The COBRA architecture can be customized to meet the requirements for many standards (WLAN (IEEE802.11n to .11ac), cellular (LTE to LTE-advanced), and broadcasting (DVB-T/H to DVB-T2)) and dedicated needs.

COBRA contains imec’s energy-efficient high-performance ADRES reconfigurable baseband processor featuring multi-threading and wide SIMD (single instruction, multiple data) capabilities. The associated tools enable C-based compilation, as well as assisted parallelization over multiple cores and/or threads. This speeds up the design leading to shorter time-to-market and more energy-efficient radios. Imec’s low-power flexible forward-error correction (FlexFEC) processor template achieving high-speed turbo & LDPC is also included. An LDPC-specific instance for multi-standard broadcasting has also been derived to further optimize power and area. Moreover, COBRA features a novel ASIP (application-specific integrated processor)-based digital front-end enabling flexible filtering synchronization and spectrum sensing. This component also enables hierarchical platform activation, resulting in idle power in the range of 2mW in 65 low-power CMOS technology for the baseband platform.

In its green radio program, imec partners up with industrial players to design the next generation cognitive radios, targeting increased integration and improved power efficiency radios. The COBRA platform, which is being designed together with the industrial partners of imec’s green radio program, is now available for licensing. The reconfigurable radio architecture and related cores can be evaluated and tested at imec.

Liesbet Van Der Perre, Program Director Wireless Communication: “With every new generation of mobile communication devices we expect more flexibility and more intelligence. Devices that can negotiate and switch between frequencies to optimally use the available spectrum. Devices that switch between standards, choosing the best option depending on location, user environment and user application. Imec’s COBRA technology is an answer to that need, offering high flexibility combined with the energy efficiency needed in mobile devices.”

T-Mobile Expands Super-Fast Network and Availability of T-Mobile® webConnect Rocket USB Laptop Stick to Cover 25 Major Metropolitan Areas

Today, T-Mobile USA, Inc. announced the expansion of its super-fast mobile broadband network, now offering 4G speeds1 to more than 25 major metropolitan areas across the U.S., and expects to cover more than 75 million Americans with HSPA+ by the end of June. Complementing the network expansion is the availability of the T-Mobile® webConnect Rocket™ USB Laptop Stick, the first HSPA+ capable device from a national U.S. wireless carrier, in T-Mobile retail stores in these new areas.

Now HSPA+ and the T-Mobile® webConnect Rocket™ USB Laptop Stick are available in major metropolitan areas across the country including Los Angeles; Dallas; Atlanta; Houston; Seattle; Tampa and Orlando, Fla.; Pittsburgh; Charlotte, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem, N.C.; Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Okla.; New Orleans; and Charleston, S.C. In addition, HSPA+ has been expanded to Bentonville, Ark.; Anderson, S.C.; and Fayetteville, N.C. T-Mobile’s HSPA+ mobile broadband service is already live in New York; Philadelphia; Las Vegas; Memphis; Upstate New York; Connecticut; Providence, R.I.; and the Washington, D.C., suburbs.

“T-Mobile has rolled out HSPA+ service to more than 25 major metropolitan areas in four month’s time, as we drive towards having the most pervasive mobile broadband network delivering 4G speeds in the country,” said Neville Ray, senior vice president of Engineering and Operations for T-Mobile USA. “T-Mobile is delivering unprecedented value to our customers with the availability of a super-fast mobile broadband experience combined with compelling and affordable devices and data plans.”

Next Generation of AmosConnect from Stratos Enhances Broadband Connectivity for Vessels at Sea

–AmosConnect 8 features flexible design to improve business efficiency, meeting all maritime application requirements–

Stratos Global Corporation, the leading global provider of advanced mobile and fixed-site remote communications solutions, today announced the commercial availability of AmosConnect 8, the latest generation of its popular AmosConnect solution.

AmosConnect from Stratos integrates vessel and shore-based office applications. It is an easy-to-use, yet highly sophisticated application that seamlessly integrates email, fax, telex, GSM text, interoffice communication, and access for mobile personnel into a single messaging system.

AmosConnect 8 enhances new broadband IP-based maritime satellite services which include FleetBroadband, Iridium OpenPort and the VSAT solutions OceanVSAT and StratosITek. Integration with these broadband services enables users to control their sessions and ensure optimal airtime use directly from AmosConnect.

The AmosConnect 8 portal brings all ship-relevant data to one central information page. For example, the sending of reports and the receipt of weather updates and company news is achieved within the same interface.

With this new version, all service settings are remotely configurable from a central office. This functionality greatly reduces implementation and support time.

With AmosConnect 8, Stratos expands upon its popular application by delivering StratosNet Accelerator, extended remote configuration, cost allocation and extended message filtering – in addition to enhancing its current features of email messaging, automatic file transfer and data synchronization. These improvements help ensure streamlined operations, cost efficiency and optimization of available bandwidth.

The new AmosConnect 8 optimizes the use of satellite airtime by automatically compressing and caching all transfers. AmosConnect 8 also supports all narrowband satellite connections. Stratos’ new AmosConnect hub platform, featuring ultra-modern hardware technology, has been extensively tested and began operation this month.

Upgrading to AmosConnect 8 will be easy for the thousands of vessels that are using AmosConnect from Stratos for their daily communications. Nearly 20,000 AmosConnect from Stratos licenses have been issued and the service is used by more than 200,000 officers and crewmembers on vessels operated by Wallem Shipmanagement, Dockendale Shipping and the Royal Netherlands Navy, among others. Stratos is the largest supplier of mobile satellite services to the maritime industry, with communications to more than 40,000 maritime terminals worldwide.

AmosConnect is one of the foundations of The Stratos Advantage, a range of value-added services that provides ship managers with optimal communications performance and cost efficiency.

Stratos President and CEO Jim Parm said, “AmosConnect 8 brings AmosConnect into the broadband era. Its modular, flexible design ensures it will meet both present and future maritime application requirements. It is the latest example of our ongoing efforts to improve crew welfare and business efficiency for ship managers and ship owners.”

About The Stratos Advantage
