Pulse’s High Efficiency Stubby Antennas Enable Global Cellular Network Access

For Efficient Wireless M2M Connectivity in a Small Form Factor

Pulse, a Technitrol Company (NYSE:TNL – News), a worldwide leader in electronic component and subassembly design and manufacturing, introduces its new family of stubby external antennas. With an efficiency of more than 55% in all bands and a height of less than 50mm, Pulse’s antennas enable wireless devices to access the major cellular networks worldwide. They provide a reliable wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) connection in applications such as smart metering, monitoring, industrial controls, and data-logging.

The stubby antennas cover frequency bands 824-960 and 1710-1990 MHz for all widely used cellular bands for 2G, 2.5G and 3G applications. They have a peak gain of 1 dBi in the 824–960 MHz range, 2 dBi in the 1710–1990 MHz range, and 2.5 dBi in the 1920–2170 MHz range, with an impedance of 50 Ohms. Operating temperatures range from -40 to 85 degrees Celsius.

Pulse’s stubby cellular antennas come in two configurations. The W1900 and W1902 are straight antennas for connection to the top of a device or modem while the W1910 and W1911 have a right angle for a side connection. The W1910/11 is 49mm high and the W1900/02 is 49.5mm.

The peak radiated efficiency for Pulse’s stubby antennas ranges from 50% to 65%, which is the percentage of the original radio signal which is actually radiated from the antenna. The higher the efficiency, the less power is needed from the radio and the more economical the design. A lower efficiency antenna requires amplification which draws more current, thereby increasing energy consumption. Greater signal strength provides higher efficiency resulting in higher system integrity.

“This new family of stubby antennas is a great addition to the expanding Pulse M2M antenna range,” explained Elaine Baxter, marketing manager, Pulse Wireless Devices Antenna Division. “These cellular antennas are reliable and come in small form factors that enable companies to quickly bring their wireless M2M modems to market.”

Pulse’s stubby cellular antennas are packaged in quantities of 20 each. Antennas come standard with SMA male connectors and are available with SMA RP-male versions with additional connector options to follow. Pricing and lead times are available upon request. Additional information on these and other M2M external antenna products can be found on the Pulse website in the antenna application section: http://www.pulseeng.com/index.php?id=928&928=#M2M_external.

New Antenna Technology Provides Dramatic Improvements in Performance, Efficiency and Radiated Power Based on Easy-to-Manufacture Micro-strip Technology

RENO, NV–(Marketwire – 03/16/10) – Dockon, Inc. today announced the release of the first commercially available Compound PxM Loop (CPL™) antenna for embedded product designs. Available now, the Dockon reference design CPL antenna increases radiation efficiency, intensity, directivity (gain) and radiated power for a given input in a small package.

Using common manufacturing techniques, Dockon’s CPL technology can be used in most any wireless application, including those that require MIMO and have space constraints. The technology is suitable for a wide variety of wireless applications, including mobile computing devices, industrial controls, automotive, aerospace and military, medical devices, consumer electronics and stand alone antennas.

CPL antennas offer higher gain in a smaller size with efficiencies never before available in such a small form factor. CPL antennas are easily manufactured using conventional PCB techniques. CPL antennas can also offer a very broad bandwidth. More than one octave with positive gain across the band is possible. CPL antenna designs may be etched, printed or cut from a wide variety of substrate materials, including low cost FR4 depending on application and transmit power requirements.

“CPL technology is the culmination of more than 20 years of prior research and rewrites 60 years of assumptions about electrically small antennas,” said Patrick Johnston, CEO of Dockon. “After years of development, testing and refinement of the design process, CPL antennas deliver on the promise of compound antenna technology in an easy to manufacture format. CPL is a revolution in antenna design offering a more powerful and efficient radiator over a wider band in a smaller footprint than ever before possible.”

CPL antennas are the first commercially available compound field antennas that utilize both magnetic loop radiators and co-located electric field radiators. Conventional antenna technologies typically excite either electric or magnetic radiators, but not both. This simultaneous excitation of both radiators results in an effective cancellation of reactive power, improving the overall performance and efficiency. Radiation efficiency in the 90 percent range is common in CPL antenna designs.

Dockon will begin licensing the CPL technology immediately. For customers with unique requirements or custom applications, Dockon can help speed time to market and testing of new products using their unique design methodologies.

Pinyon Technology Introduces AirWire WiMAX Tri-Band Antenna

- New antenna supports the WiMAX market around the world -

RENO, Nev., March 16 /PRNewswire/ — Pinyon Technologies, developer of unique antenna solutions based upon its patented AirWire® technology, today announced its WiMAX Tri-Band antenna. The AirWire WiMAX Tri-Band antennas cover all of the licensed spectrum profiles for WiMAX enabling OEM manufacturers to outfit their CPE for any WiMAX market around the world with the same antenna. AirWire WiMAX Tri-Band antennas provide polar diversity, adding an additional degree of antenna diversity to a wireless system equipped with MIMO spatial diversity.

“Pinyon’s patented resonant slot AirWire antenna is specifically designed to operate in noisy environments through polarization diversity,” said Debashis Bagchi, Pinyon Technologies CEO. “Polarization diversity allows AirWire to capture horizontally polarized signals which most existing antennas ignore.”

Pinyon’s AirWire WiMAX Tri-Band antennas can be customized for various form factors. These antennas cover the WiMAX spectrum profiles of 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz and maintain high gain across all the band profiles. They can also accommodate any connector type.

Pinyon’s AirWire™ WiMAX Tri-Band antenna polar diversity works to stabilize the link between the CPE and the WiMAX base station. Most collinear and dipole antennas, commonly used on CPE, only transmit and receive vertically polarized signals. AirWire WiMAX antenna’s polar diversity uniquely overcomes this common shortcoming by detecting both horizontally and vertically polarized signals. Urban and indoor building environments produce horizontally polarized signal reflections that collinear or dipole antennas completely ignore. Ignoring these horizontally polarized reflections reduces the chances of establishing a stable radio link resulting in substantially reducing throughput.

About Pinyon Technologies

Headquartered in Reno, Nev., Pinyon Technologies develops, designs and commercially sells antenna solutions based upon a unique, patented AirWire technology. Pinyon’s unique AirWire technology is designed for WiFi, WiMax, Bluetooth, UWB and mobile applications. Pinyon’s robust AirWire technology is adaptable to other wireless applications as the technology is scalable to multiple frequencies. AirWire is well suited for applications that require high gain in a noisy multipath environment. Pinyon’s business model consists of licensing as well as manufacturing and selling antennas as end products based on the application. AirWire enhances applications that require the following features: high efficiency to maximize gain, customizable for precise radiation pattern control, real-time control for beam steering, current driven for scalability, and intrinsic band pass filtering to minimize noise.
