Cyan Announces TowerAware Wireless Backhaul Solutions, a Tower-Optimized Solution Set Providing Service Differentiation

Cyan Announces TowerAware Wireless Backhaul Solutions

Tower-Optimized Solutions Give Cyan Customers a Competitive Edge in Providing Backhaul for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and Other Mobile Service Providers

Cyan today announced TowerAware(SM) wireless backhaul solutions, a tower-optimized solution set providing service differentiation, unprecedented scale and superior performance, while simplifying wireless backhaul network operations. Leveraging Cyan’s recently announced Service Level Aware Networks(SM) framework, Cyan’s TowerAware solutions combine industry leading service level aware Cy360 planning, management and verification software and SaaS systems with new temperature hardened Z-Series platforms to satisfy even the most demanding 4G/LTE backhaul SLAs. Several of Cyan’s customers have already deployed TowerAware solutions to win wireless backhaul service contracts for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and other mobile service providers.

Rapidly evolving applications combined with new bandwidth-intensive smartphones are driving unprecedented traffic growth on new 4G/LTE mobile networks. The June 1, 2011 CVIN report forecasts an unprecedented 2,600 percent increase in mobile data traffic growth from 2010 to 2015. As these services drive exponential increases in packet traffic, networks must provide even greater scale and reduce the transport costs, while maintaining high quality of service (QoS). To achieve those objectives, mobile service providers demand high-performance wireless backhaul services, with guaranteed throughput of low latency Ethernet services, sub-50 millisecond protection switching, hitless software upgrades, guaranteed upgrades to faster speeds and real-time verification of SLA performance. Cyan’s TowerAware wireless backhaul solutions satisfy those demanding needs and more with Cyan’s market leading Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms, CyAlliance partner products, and Cy360 software support systems.

Key attributes of Cyan’s TowerAware wireless backhaul solutions include:

1. Scalability. Cyan has enhanced the Z-Series family with an array of service modules and platforms, including new outside plant (OSP) cabinet systems providing NxGbE, 10GbE, and Nx10GbE transport services for virtually unlimited capacity expansions. Temperature-hardened platforms and service modules allow Cyan’s market-leading Z-Series packet optical transport platforms to be pushed further toward the network edge, up to and including deployments at the cell tower.

2. Carrier Grade Ethernet Performance. Cyan’s Z-Series platforms and service modules are MEF 9 & 14 certified; supporting connection oriented Ethernet (COE) with guaranteed service level performance for critical services. Support for key industry standards such as ITU G.8032 guarantee protection switching of Ethernet services in less than 50 ms, with actual field performance meeting and often exceeding historic performance benchmarks of more costly and scale-limited SONET/SDH technologies.

3. Service Level Aware Network Design. Cyan’s unique and industry leading CyPlan multi-layer planning and network design service allows Cyan customers to design TowerAware wireless backhaul networks with Google Maps integration showing the precise location of all cell towers in the region, and their proximity to service nodes. CyPlan provides a single integrated planning tool to design networks at both the service layers and optical layers — providing assurance that backhaul networks will support a smooth and easy upgrade to DWDM when needed.

4. Service Level Aware Network Management. Cyan’s revolutionary CyMS multi-layer management system provides a unique TowerAware network management solution. The ability of CyMS to clearly illustrate the relationships between wireless backhaul services and all associated transport layers, down to and including the optical fiber, provides a comprehensive service level aware view of the network. Among other capabilities, CyMS provides three-dimensional network topologies that can be filtered to illustrate only those services and transport layers associated with a particular wireless backhaul connection. Additionally, CyMS’s trail analyzer provides a three-dimensional, highly detailed schematic illustrating all transport links, network elements, modules, and services involved in an end-to-end connection.

5. Service Level Aware SLA Verification. Cyan’s recently announced CyPortal provides yet another critical component of a comprehensive TowerAware solution. CyPortal is a cloud-based portal allowing backhaul providers to give mobile operators a detailed view of their wireless backhaul services in a Google Maps format that clearly illustrates the location of each cell tower and the service connection back to the mobile switching center. CyPortal provides detailed real-time and historic reporting of key SLA performance metrics such as throughput, packet-loss, latency, jitter, and availability. CyPortal also provides this SLA performance reporting for third-party CyAlliance approved devices supporting ITU Y.1731 Ethernet OAM such as Accedian Networks and Overture Networks Ethernet NIDs.

Cyan’s unique combination of Service Level Aware Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms and Cy360 software systems are broadly deployed for more than just wireless backhaul, including business Ethernet services, broadband backhaul, data center connectivity and wholesale transport. However, Cyan’s optimization of these solution components to enable TowerAware networks provide unmatched opportunities for service providers to differentiate and win in the highly competitive wireless backhaul market.

“Many of our service provider customers have identified wireless backhaul as a strategic growth market, consisting of fiercely competitive, high-stakes design wins,” said Eric Clelland, vice president of North American sales for Cyan. “Winning or losing a key wireless backhaul contract can have long-term market implications for service providers. TowerAware solutions, which can incorporate third-party products from our CyAlliance Program, give our customers the competitive edge to win greater market share and establish a strategic network footprint.”

New TowerAware Z-Series Product Additions

Responding to customer demand for more scalable edge aggregation and transport solutions, Cyan announced general availability of multiple new products to enhance the Cyan Z-Series TowerAware solution portfolio. The new Cyan ZR-6 is Cyan’s first outside plant (OSP) cabinet supporting the Cyan Z33 and optional select CyAlliance partner solution components to support a diverse range of service requirements. Cyan also announced availability of a new temperature hardened version of the industry-leading Z33 packet-optical transport platform (P-OTP) and common control modules supporting industrial rated temperature ranges of -40 to +65 degrees Celsius. The Z-Series portfolio of service modules have also been expanded with the introduction of a new Z-Series PME-216i module providing MEF 9 & 14 certified Ethernet services, with connection oriented Ethernet transport and advanced Y.1731 Ethernet OAM, and a new LAD-8i module, providing the ability to add up to eight dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) channels of 10G or 100G wavelength services per fiber.

The combination of OSP cabinet configurations, temperature hardened P-OTPs, Ethernet and DWDM service modules gives service providers greater flexibility for scaling the capacity and performance of Ethernet and backhaul services across the network edge.
