Intec Deploys Blue Coat PacketShaper Appliances for Video Conferencing, VoIP, Email and File Exchange
Intec Solves Video Conferencing, VoIP and Remote Access Issues With Blue Coat PacketShaper Appliances
Digital Communications Between Tokyo and Shanghai Locations Previously Unreliable and of Poor Quality
Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:BCSI – News), the technology leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced that Intec Inc., a prominent Japanese IT consulting company, has deployed Blue Coat® PacketShaper® appliances to enable quality video conferencing, Voice over IP (VoIP), email and file exchange between its headquarters in Tokyo and its software development center in Shanghai. Before deploying the PacketShaper appliances, latency and network congestion prevented the productive use of video conferencing and VoIP telephony between the offices and also made email and remote file access extremely slow.
“Because of severe congestion on our network link between our Tokyo headquarters and Shanghai development center, it was not feasible to rely on video conferencing or Voice over IP,” said Mr. Satoshi Nishihara, general manager of the information systems department, Intec. “The Blue Coat PacketShaper appliances helped us regain control of our network to bring it in line with our business priorities and ensure quality communication between locations.”
While only 1,100 miles (1,800 kilometers) apart, the Tokyo and Shanghai sites suffered from latency of up to 300 milliseconds, making real-time communication nearly impossible. Much of the latency was caused by congestion on the network due to a high volume of Web traffic and file transfers. Like many companies, the Wide Area Network (WAN) is becoming increasingly dominated by Web traffic. At Intec, 60-70 percent of WAN traffic was Web-based. The high levels of Web traffic caused congestion, which affected business communication and made available bandwidth highly unpredictable.
By deploying PacketShaper appliances, they reduced response time between server and client dramatically as well as keeping bandwidth consistently available to key business applications. In addition, the company is now able to set and maintain service level agreements for real-time communications to ensure quality, while monitoring the sessions in real time. Email and file access between the locations also is more efficient, boosting user productivity and the speed of business processes.
“With a burgeoning level of Web traffic dominating companies’ WAN links to branch offices, companies are losing control of their networks and are unable to sustain essential communications or application response times,” said Matt Young, vice president, Asia Pacific region, Blue Coat Systems. “Blue Coat brings application-level visibility to what is travelling over corporate networks and controls to accelerate and optimize business-critical traffic.”
