ADTRAN®, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN – News), announced today that theOPTI-6100® Multi-Service Provisioning Platform (MSPP) with IEEE 1613 compliance has received a 2009 Smart Grid Product of the Year Award from Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC) and Intelligent Communications Partners (ICP).

Utility companies across the U.S. are moving to take advantage of the $4.5 billion in stimulus funding through the use of Smart Grid technologies. In direct response to customer requests, ADTRAN introduced a version of its industry-leading OPTI-6100 platform for utility substations that is IEEE 1613 compliant. The OPTI-6100 IEEE 1613-compliant subsystems are specially designed for Smart Grid-compliant substations and meet stringent industry standards for electromagnetic interference and do not disrupt network operation in the presence of electrical disturbances. This OPTI-6100 enables utility companies to extend the use of this optical access platform into additional critical areas of their network.

“ADTRAN has quietly built up a leadership position helping telcos adopt IP,” said Jon Arnold, co-founder of ICP and co-producer of the Smart Grid Summit. “They understand the challenges faced by utilities, both in terms of the physical environment and the need to support multiple network protocols.”

The OPTI-6100 is a high-density, compact, multi-service optical access and aggregation platform. It is perfectly suited for delivery of high density DS1s or E1s, Ethernet over SONET/PDH, Ethernet aggregation, TDM over Pseudowire, multiple DS3/E3 delivery, customer premises service delivery, and mobile backhaul. The OPTI-6100 is utilized by communications carriers, enterprise users, and energy companies worldwide. The flexibility of multiple plug-in units eliminates the need for separate network elements and minimizes CAPEX and OPEX by delivering TDM and Ethernet services from a single system.

“Products that are engineered for robust communications are usually destined for telecommunications networks or large enterprises, but power substations require additional engineering design consideration,” said Jason Morgan, director of product management, ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division. “By blending the efficiencies of state-of-the-art communications equipment to operate in the stringent power substation environment, ADTRAN tailored the OPTI-6100 to enable utilities to meet growing customer demands and advance forward Smart Grid communications in an extremely cost-effective manner.”

“SmartGrid.TMCnet.com is pleased to grant a 2009 Product of the Year Award to ADTRAN for the OPTI-6100,” said Rich Tehrani, CEO, TMC. “We are proud to honor ADTRAN’s accomplishments in the advancement of Smart Grid technologies.”
