WiLAN Establishes Foothold in PC/TV Market
CyberLink licenses WiLAN’s V-Chip technology
Wi-LAN Inc. (“WiLAN” or the “Company”) (TSX:WIN – News), a leading technology innovation and licensing company, today announced that CyberLink Corporation (“CyberLink”) of Taiwan has signed a multi-year running royalty license that gives CyberLink access to WiLAN’s V-Chip technology for its products which enable a computer to be used as a TV or PC/TV.
“This is exciting for WiLAN as CyberLink is a major vendor in the PC/TV market,” said Najmul Siddiqui, President, WiLAN V-Chip. “We believe the PC/TV market, driven by digital broadband convergence, has significant future growth potential.”
WiLAN believes it owns key patents relating to V-Chip technology. In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission has mandated that V-Chip be included in all stand-alone digital television broadcast receivers, including those used in computers.
Founded in 1996, CyberLink is a leader and pioneer in enabling digital multimedia on PCs, mobile television applications and other consumer electronic devices. In addition to being distributed through major global retailers and available on-line, CyberLink’s products are bundled with PCs from top-tier vendors including Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer and Sony.
The specific terms of the agreement are confidential. This license agreement brings the total number of companies that have licensed WiLAN’s V-Chip technologies to 119 and the total number of companies that have licensed WiLAN technologies to 209.
