Occam Networks Introduces New GPON ONTs that Accelerate the Transition to FTTP while Simplifying Premise Networks

New Terminals Expand Breadth of GPON Solutions

Occam Networks®, Inc. (Nasdaq:OCNW – News) a leading broadband access supplier offering multiservice access platform (MSAP) solutions based on pure packet technologies, announced today the introduction of three new GPON optical network terminals (ONTs) designed to accelerate the transition to FTTP. The ON 2541, 2543 and 2544 ONTs offer a wide range of features allowing for maximum flexibility to fit subscribers’ needs as well as the providers’ network architecture. All ONTs are compatible with Occam’s award winning BLC 6000 MSAP featuring the 6322 GPON OLT. The new ONTs will be available in late 2009.

Occam announced the availability of these new ONTs at its Fifth Annual Occam Networks Users’ Group (ONUG) Conference, held August 31 – September 3 at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort in Austin, Texas. More than 300 service providers, partners and others are attending. With the theme “Think Big or Stay Home,” the conference features presentations by leading telecommunications thought leaders as well as hands on sessions to brief audience members on Occam’s newest solutions.

All ONTs in the ON 2540 series provide a 2.5Gbps downstream and 1.2Gbps upstream GPON optical uplink and two POTS ports. The ON 2541 and ON 2543 also offer a Gigabit Ethernet option and the ON 2543’s HPNA port allows for simple, cost-effective home device connectivity through existing coaxial wiring. The cost-effective ON 2544 includes four Fast Ethernet ports for a variety of premise network and ancillary equipment connectivity needs.

The ON 2541 and ON 2543 are designed to support Whole Home Networks, where an intelligent Residential Gateway acts as a service node for all network connected devices inside the home. No longer satisfied with simple internet access, residential customers want to share music, video and other data amongst PCs, gaming consoles, TVs and other devices in the home. The ON 2541, with its single high performance Gigabit Ethernet subscriber port and the ON 2543 with Gigabit Ethernet and HPNA coaxial interface provide a service provider with a choice of media options for service delivery.

Working closely with the inventors of the technology, Occam has integrated into the ON 2543 the industry’s first implementation of intelligent bandwidth management over coaxial interfaces. In order to assure high quality of experience (QoE), Occam has also integrated a significant set of troubleshooting and management tools for HPNA over coaxial cable.

“Service providers are extending their reach into the customer home to both enhance the subscriber experience and to set the stage for additional revenue generating services,” said Juan Vela, Director, Solutions Marketing and Strategy for Occam Networks. “Occam is responding to this demand with the ON 2500 series of ONTs.”

ll Occam ONTs feature patented IP Security Management (IPSM) that allows for dynamic, “hands free” network security that ensures robust subscriber traffic Administration, Authorization and Accounting (AAA). They deliver an extensive suite of services including lifeline POTS using SIP or MGCP VoIP or GR-303, high speed Internet, Ethernet private line, IPTV and RF video. These new ONTs can be deployed in environmentally-hardened enclosures for outdoor installation, and are compliant with the following standards: ITU-T G.984, ITU-T G.984.4 OMCI, TR-156 and TR-101.

“The next frontier for creating a better subscriber experience and increasing revenues is within the broadband premises. Occam’s new ONTs are designed to address a variety of residential and business environments as operators continue the migration to fiber,” said Vela,. “Occam’s extensive family of GPON ONTs equips broadband operators with the tools they need to attract, retain and increase subscriber revenues while accelerating the transition to fiber.”
