Nevion Introduces VS901 JPEG 2000 Compression and Decompression Solution with Lowest Latency, Highest Quality and Most Powerful Signal Transport Over Any Network

Nevion Announces JPEG 2000 Video Codec Providing HD-SDI and SDI Signal Transport over Any Network

Breakthrough Technology Offers Lowest Latency, Highest Quality, and Greenest Solutions for Transport over IP, SONET/SDH and Fiber Overlay

Nevion (www.nevion.com), a leading video transport solution provider for broadcasters, telecommunications service providers and government entities worldwide, announced today the introduction of its VS901 JPEG 2000 compression and decompression solution offering the lowest latency, highest quality and most powerful signal transport over any network.

The VS901 series, part of Nevion’s Ventura line of modular transport solutions, introduces infrastructure saving, visually lossless compression to contribution and primary distribution applications where compression had previously not been acceptable. The groundbreaking technology also enables unparalleled flexibility and enhanced image quality in content production and broadcast distribution applications.

With JPEG 2000 compression at the contribution level, downstream distribution quality encoders with low bit rate outputs are now fed with the highest quality video signals for increased compression efficiency. The result is increased efficiency throughout the entire video transmission and distribution chain.

“With the VS901 series of JPEG 2000 encoders and decoders, you can now transport SDI and HD-SDI video content at the highest quality over any network, whether fiber overlay, SONET/SDH or IP,” said Dr. Chin Koh, director of product management for Nevion’s Ventura product family. “Broadcasters and service providers can leverage existing lower cost 270Mbps infrastructure to support contribution quality HD content where they previously could not. Or they can use the same infrastructure to enable the network to carry more SD content.”

The VS901 series features the lowest deterministic latency for a guaranteed 45ms complete encode and decode cycle, and the highest level of integration in the industry. Changes or additions to functionality are easily achieved through remote software upgrades. Upgrades are completed without removing the card from its chassis and with limited interruption to service, thus reducing onsite staffing costs. All VS901 modules are certified to stringent US-based carriers’ NEBS Level 3 requirements for operation in harsh environments.

“With the industry now embracing the benefits of JPEG 2000 compression, including coding efficiency, low latency and cost efficiency, particularly over multiple compression and decompression cycles, the advances enabled by the VS901 are truly extraordinary,” said Eugene Keane, president of Nevion USA. “With these advances, broadcasters and service providers will have new flexibility and opportunities to maximize resources like never before.”

VS901 modules are also the greenest on the market due to the use of state-of-the-art FPGAs providing maximum integration and a reduced number of components. In addition, the VS901 family features the lowest power consumption and highest port density in the industry.
