WiMAX Forum Launches Roaming Program

PORTLAND, Ore.The WiMAX Forum has launched its Global Roaming Program, which allows operators and vendors to obtain the information they need to establish WiMAX roaming services.

The program was designed with the best practices of cellular and Wi-Fi roaming in mind, according to XJ Wang, senior director of marketing at the WiMAX Forum. The program documents were developed with input from more than 20 WiMAX operators and a handful of roaming exchange, clearinghouse and settlement providers.

WiMAX Forum representatives say offering the roaming tools at such an early stage is key. Although the roaming program will support any type of roaming, be it domestic, regional or global, the expectation is roaming will happen first in a domestic and regional manner.

The forum basically is offering up the program now so it’s there when operators need it. The program includes a “how to” manual, roaming specifications, a contract template for use in entering roaming agreements with other operators and a pre-launch roaming test plan.

The roaming program is especially important given the WiMAX Forum’s mission, which is to facilitate the adoption of mobile WiMAX by operators across the world and make sure products are interoperable through its certification programs.
